The 2023 United Nations Secretary-General Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict estimates a staggering '112% increase in attacks on schools and hospitals, in particular in #Ukraine, #BurkinaFaso, #Israel and the State of #Palestine, #Myanmar, #Mali and #Afghanistan.'
This is against international humanitarian law.

On this #InternationalDayofEducation we must reckon with the state of the world for children denied, and schools and educational institutions targeted in conflict.
Globally, a quarter of a billion (224 million) children have had their education disrupted due to crisis, and 72 million children are out of school.

Excited to be part of the Working Group on Learning Loss, a collaboration between The Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
The aim is to produce the first Canada-wide analysis on the effects of the pandemic on learning.
Early days still, but looking forward to this important work.

@academicchatter I urge researchers based in #Canada to reply to this survey from the tri-council funding agencies.
My two cents: most researchers want their #Research to be #OpenAccess and publicly available but there is a severe shortage of funds to cover APC charges by journals. Many institutions do not provide funding for this and there is very little external funding to support it - even from the funding councils - including #SSHRC.
