  1. I've been using my e-bike for commuting and groceries all summer.

I'm overcome with the urge to use my mechanical bike today for a quick pop into lab to change media and a little stop at the store. Wish me luck. I may regret this.

I visited UCLA and was pretty impressed by their approach. There are huge sections of campus that are clearly marked 'WALK BICYCLES and SCOOTERS' and there are massive banks for scooter/bicycle parking. They also seemed to work with several companies that rent out scooters and those are all stored in the approved parking area.

Apparently, the fines for violations can be high and include DMV citations and they give random meal vouchers for compliance.

  3. If you've led or attended a Power Hour for a GRC, I'd like to hear what strategies worked well and what didn't.

I'll be running one later this month. One issue I've seen in past power hours is power differentials. Specifically, PIs dominate in small-group discussions. Did you do anything to address this?

If you are a trainee/ECR, did the power hour empower you? If so how, or if not what could have been improved?

    Please boost.

  4. Our grad programs have mandatory once-a-week courses where students present to other students with a few faculty in attendance.

The goal is for students to get to practice public speaking and to share techniques/info between labs.

I attended one yesterday and was shocked to see at least four students knitting, many students glued to their phones, and others working on their computers.

Is it not considered rude to obviously ignore a speaker anymore?

  5. Continuing a useful conversation from another platform.

It's important to learn how to receive feedback about your work.

My natural inclination is to get defensive--even when someone is trying to help.

It took me a lot of practice to be able to listen to criticism in real time and not start an internal rebuttal.

It's even worse if you voice that internal rebuttal because the person trying to help will feel unappreciated.

  6. Dear trainees (dare I say young people) in lab, do not say 'I guess so' if you really mean 'no' or 'probably not'. Your PI likely hears 'Yes'.

Dear PI's if someone in your lab says 'I guess so' they probably do not mean 'Yes'.

    A concerned outside observer.

  7. What's the best format for a research community to share information and resources?

I recently attended a GRC and one of the attendees wanted to start a LinkedIn group for our field so we can more easily communicate with one another about upcoming events, publications, or discoveries of bad reagents.

The only examples I have of this are e-mail feeds like the pombe listserv.

If anyone is in the Ann Arbor area, Food Gatherers is a fantastic charity that will make the most of your cash or food donation.

They also have many opportunities to volunteer like in the warehouse or kitchen, so if you want to feel more connected to your charitable donation that's an option.

  14. Hey Sciencers,

My friend Erin Cram and her excellent postdoc Mustafi Amin developed a document that teaches students "How to do a protocol", delving into some of the unwritten steps for success in research labs.

Any ideas of a good place for them to send it?
