Invoking our legendary fight song, he asked the crowd to “sing” for suffragist Sarah Burger, who battled to get #women admitted as students; for Moritz Levi, UM's first #Jewish professor; for all the students who fought for #RacialJustice at #UM as part of the Black Action Movement; and for the “pro-#Palestinian student activists, who have over these past two years opened our hearts to the injustice and inhumanity of #Israel’s war in #Gaza.”

...Anderen Architekturikonen der DDR wird hingegen deutlich weniger Wertschätzung entgegengebracht. So soll das Sport- und Erholungszentrum (SEZ) an der Landsberger Allee bereits am 2. März der Abrissbirne zum Opfer fallen. Für die SED-Führung war der 1981 eröffnete futuristisch gestalteten Freizeitkomplex ein weiteres Prestigeprojekt, das die Überlegenheit des Sozialismus beweisen sollte.
Verramscht und verwahrlost
Nachdem der Betrieb im SEZ nach der #Wende nach und nach eingestellt wurde, ging es für einen symbolischen Euro an einen Investor, der versprach den Freizeitkomplex inklusive #Spaßbad wiederzubeleben. Doch stattdessen erfolgten jahrelange Verwahrlosung und Leerstand. 2023 ging das SEZ wieder an das Land Berlin. Der Senat will abreißen und Wohnungen bauen. Das ist rechtlich möglich, denn im Gegensatz zum Kino International steht das SEZ nicht unter #Denkmalschutz.
Die Proteste von Anwohner:innen, Architekt:innen und #Umweltschützer:innen blieben ungehört. #Berlin brauche nun einmal Wohnungen dringender, heißt es vom Senat. Die letzte Hoffnung ist eine Klage, mit der die Vereine „Gemeingut in BürgerInnenhand“ und die Naturfreunde Berlin einen Abriss noch verhindern wollen.
Die Aktivist:innen wollen die Denkmalwürdigkeit des Komplexes richterlich feststellen lassen. Zuletzt sprachen sich im vergangenen Dezember 150 Wissenschaftler:innen für einen Erhalt aus. Die Aktivist:innen hoffen, mit einer einstweiligen Verfügung den Abriss zumindest aufschieben zu können.
Es ist ein Trauerspiel, dass die Abrissgegner:innen den #Senat durch Gerichtsverfahren davon abhalten müssen, das architektonische Gedächtnis der #Stadt zu vernichten. Dabei ist der #Bestandserhalt nicht nur eine Frage des Denkmalschutzes, sondern vor allem eine ökologische. Es ist Wahnsinn, Schwimm- und #Sportanlagen abzureißen, nur um sie an andere Stelle wieder aufzubauen. Der dichtbesiedelte #Bezirk #Friedrichshain- #Kreuzberg ist in dieser Beziehung extrem unterversorgt. Eine Sanierung und Wiedereröffnung wäre hier die einfachste, ökologischste und offensichtlichste Lösung. Wenn es beim #KinoInternational geht, warum nicht beim #SEZ?
