I once got very stoned at a house party in college, and for what felt like an hour, I watched three hipsters play a hypnotic game of kick-the-ballon.
Each hipster would stare fixedly at the 3 pink balloons on the kitchen floor. Occasionally, one player would kick one of the balloons. A flurry of further kicks would ensue, but not furious. Sometimes furious, but interspersed long periods of intense consideration. Often there would be false kicks. A hipster would dart toward a pink balloon, but draw back, reconsidering. From time to time, one of them would recoil in embarrassed disappointment, and all the hipsters would laugh.
How I longed to enter the circle of understanding! To see the field of play as these brilliant tacticians were seeing it! I invented bizarre and ludicrous rule sets, but nothing made sense. Was it something to do with the surrounding conversation – kicking every time they heard the word "the"? No… the kitchen had emptied out now, but they were still kicking.
Could there be some obscure markings to distinguish the balloons? I scrutinized the latex contours. No. There were no markings.
I watched those hipsters kick those balloons for what felt like an hour, but was probably only about 10 minutes. Finally, although I knew that it would be weird, I just had to know. I stepped toward them, and they kindly paused their game. Hazily, I spoke: "Excuse me but… I don't understand the rules of your game. WHY do you kick the pink balloons????? What rules are there?"
The oldest hipster smirked, bemused. He pointed. "That one's green."

Ciao Mondo.
Son passati c.a. 30 anni da che affrontai il viaggio - i viaggi - e di nuovo vorrei fosse più lungo.
È incredibile come la memoria abbia confuso certi eventi ma come questi si siano comunque conservati a livello emotivo.

I know he had some problematic opinions, but Dan Simmons' Hyperion is a stunning piece of work. I hope to read The Terror and Drood some time. They are very big.

Aw, sad to hear about Dan Simmons passing away. Hyperion was my gateway to science fiction.

I felt exactly the same the author of this article described he felt after reading Hyperion. RIP Dan Simmons.
Dan Simmons, the author of more than three dozen books, including the famed Hyperion Cantos, has died from a stroke. He was 77.

And the way my wife and I commemorated the passing of Dan Simmons is to remember a dearly departed friend of ours. He gifted me the paperback version of Hyperion for my birthday. Not a new copy, but secondhand (which is fine - we were all struggling students at the time). However, our friend had stolen this copy from a secondhand bookshop, read it, hated it, and so gifted it to me.
He had stolen another book and gifted it to my wife for her birthday.
Our friend: he loved books and thought they should be free.
I hated Hyperion too.

RIP #DanSimmons! Thank you for making life that much richer with your stories!
Only you could make me fall in love with the classics, with poetry, with hard sci-fi, with horror and with hard-boiled detective fiction. Sometimes all at once
Thank you for giving me your love of Keats. And history
You were a wonderful teacher!
I’m grateful

#DanSimmons (1948–2026)
He wrote vividly cinematic prose with a mastery of setting: his Calcutta or Romania are not atmospheric, they’re miasmatic with fear. Hyperion straddles SF/F/horror, remakes the genres, and transcends them. The brutal space-opera theomachy of Ilium is counterpointed by the lovely literary bromance of machine minds bantering over the Bard vs Proust. Pity about the politics, the blog-rant banality that bled through bits of the otherwise smart and stirring storytelling.

📚 Dan Simmons has left the building, but not before leaving us with impossibly convoluted URLs to nowhere. 🤦♂️ Apparently, respecting a robot policy is the new mourning etiquette. 🤖💔

"The Fall of Hyperion", book two of 'the Hyperion Cantos' by Dan Simmons :-
"I understand," I said softly. My plate was empty. I raised the last of my bad champagne to toast Diana Philomel.
"Draw me," she said.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Draw me, M. Severn. You're an artist."
"A painter," I said, making a helpless gesture with an empty hand.
"I'm afraid I have no stylus."
Diana Philomel reached into her husband's tunic pocket and handed me a light pen. "Draw me. Please."I drew her. The portrait took shape in the air between us, lines rising and falling and turning back on themselves like neon filaments in a wire sculpture. A small crowd gathered to watch. Mild applause rippled when I finished. The drawing was not bad. It caught the lady's long, voluptuous curve of neck, high braid bridge of hair, prominent cheekbones.
Then, a figure appeared out of a farcast portal and said, "Hi, my name's James Cameron, and I'm a thieving little shit."

Listened to this as I read the end of Part 1 of The Rise of Endymion. Definitely a good listen for science fiction, especially if uneasy, meditative or horror oriented.

Say what you want about the man, but let me have this one. ->
"The Hegemony Consul sat on the balcony of his ebony spaceship and played Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-sharp Minor on an ancient but well-maintained Steinway while great, green, saurian things surged and bellowed in the swamps below. A thunderstorm was brewing to the north."

📚 The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons: Definitely best seen as the second half to a singular work than as a sequel.
