    Bello
    Bello
    Bello!

  3. I know he had some problematic opinions, but Dan Simmons' Hyperion is a stunning piece of work. I hope to read The Terror and Drood some time. They are very big.

  5. I felt exactly the same the author of this article described he felt after reading Hyperion. RIP Dan Simmons.

Dan Simmons, the author of more than three dozen books, including the famed Hyperion Cantos, has died from a stroke. He was 77.

  7. And the way my wife and I commemorated the passing of Dan Simmons is to remember a dearly departed friend of ours. He gifted me the paperback version of Hyperion for my birthday. Not a new copy, but secondhand (which is fine - we were all struggling students at the time). However, our friend had stolen this copy from a secondhand bookshop, read it, hated it, and so gifted it to me.

He had stolen another book and gifted it to my wife for her birthday.

Our friend: he loved books and thought they should be free.

    I hated Hyperion too.

  8. RIP #DanSimmons! Thank you for making life that much richer with your stories!

Only you could make me fall in love with the classics, with poetry, with hard sci-fi, with horror and with hard-boiled detective fiction. Sometimes all at once

Thank you for giving me your love of Keats. And history

    You were a wonderful teacher!

    I’m grateful

  9. #DanSimmons (1948–2026)

He wrote vividly cinematic prose with a mastery of setting: his Calcutta or Romania are not atmospheric, they’re miasmatic with fear. Hyperion straddles SF/F/horror, remakes the genres, and transcends them. The brutal space-opera theomachy of Ilium is counterpointed by the lovely literary bromance of machine minds bantering over the Bard vs Proust. Pity about the politics, the blog-rant banality that bled through bits of the otherwise smart and stirring storytelling.

  10. 📚 Dan Simmons has left the building, but not before leaving us with impossibly convoluted URLs to nowhere. 🤦‍♂️ Apparently, respecting a robot policy is the new mourning etiquette. 🤖💔

  11. "The Fall of Hyperion", book two of 'the Hyperion Cantos' by Dan Simmons :-

"I understand," I said softly. My plate was empty. I raised the last of my bad champagne to toast Diana Philomel.
    "Draw me," she said.
    "I beg your pardon?"
"Draw me, M. Severn. You're an artist."
"A painter," I said, making a helpless gesture with an empty hand.
"I'm afraid I have no stylus."
Diana Philomel reached into her husband's tunic pocket and handed me a light pen. "Draw me. Please."

I drew her. The portrait took shape in the air between us, lines rising and falling and turning back on themselves like neon filaments in a wire sculpture. A small crowd gathered to watch. Mild applause rippled when I finished. The drawing was not bad. It caught the lady's long, voluptuous curve of neck, high braid bridge of hair, prominent cheekbones.

Then, a figure appeared out of a farcast portal and said, "Hi, my name's James Cameron, and I'm a thieving little shit."
