  1. It's probably only foreshadowing that the phrase "a matter of time" has been said a bit towards the end of the episode "Zero Hour".

  2. Labour MPs ordered to sink landmark climate and environment bill.

    Are we outraged, yes. Are we surprised?

    Clive Lewis, the Norwich South MP, told the Guardian he would vote for the bill come what may: “I’m hoping the government and the climate and nature bill sponsors can come to an agreement this will be good for Labour at a time when many people feel like we are backtracking on our climate and nature commitments."

  3. So I'd heard that Airplane! was inspired by the movie Zero Hour! more than it was by Airport, but I had no idea it is a virtual shot-for-shot parody remake. Crazy.

  4. The view of Labour's Employment Rights Bill from someone who one might have thought would have been helped by it....

    She's not hopeful, not least as she expects cynical employers to manipulate the system to expand the loopholes in the proposed legislation on zero hours contracts.

  5. @alexproe

    In the UK, its illegal to do so, but of course in precarious #gigecnomy & #zerohours contract settings, that's not applicable!

  6. Exploitative practices have been common across the UK's #universities - mainly through forms of #zerohours contracts often dignified by being called 'sessional work'.... now #OxfordUniversity has lost a case on the denial of employment rights to two #academics over a 15 year period in which they were employed on 'sham contracts'.

    This sort of employment is too widespread in the HE sector, so it would be good if #university HR departments took note & ended the practice

  7. Sarah O'Connor asks in the FT, why don't people leave rubbish (exploitative) #jobs... & suggests some answers:

    Fear the next job will be worse;

    The sunk costs of building a relationship with a manager who allocates hours (in #zerohours contract);

    #publictransport limits the choice of locations you can feasibly work;

    fear of disrupting vital #benefits payments while shifting jobs;

    Benefits rules also declare leaving a job due to low pay is not a 'good reason' leading to 3 month 'sanction'!

  8. My kids will never fail to surprise me at what they can do, or what they are willing to attempt.

    The twins are in seventh grade, they did the #SchoolPlay last year ("The Puffs", it was excellent! One of my boys was "he who shall not be named"!). This year, they also want to do the school musical. One of them even wants to go above and beyond and to the so-called #ZeroHour class, which is basically a school choir from what I understand (with a tux and everything).

    All this on top of one of them playing #cello, the other playing #FrenchHorn (or just horn), both of them basically straight A's last year with one in the #GiftedEducation program.

    The next youngest kiddo is going to follow along as well - fifth grader, gifted, taking sixth grade (at least...) math.

    We will do everything we can to ensure that our kids succeed!

  11. In among the latest #labourmarket data from the ONS is the following:

    Over 1.125m people were employed on a #zerohours contract between October to December 2022.

    This is an 8.5% increase on the previous quarter & represents an all time high

    Young workers, women workers and people born outside the UK are all more like to be in zero hours employment.

    Moreover, 1 in 9 workers aged between 16 and 24 (11.7% ) are now on a zero hours contract!

    The world of work is precarious for too many

  17. @trwnh I agree that there's no *pro*-capitalist left. There's a libertarian left that is pro-*market* but anti-capitalist (#C4SS etc). There's a pragmatic social democratic left who accept capitalism (like Hillary) as the "lesser of 2 evils". There are another bunch of left liberals who prefer to avoid arguing about abstractions like "capitalism" and focus on bread-and-butter labour and green like #ZeroHourContracts or #MassExtinction (1/2) ...
