Linda Darnell and Elsa Maxwell pose for “Hotel for Women” (1939), the film debut of both. Maxwell at 56 and Darnell at 15.

For the Linda Darnell Centennial blogathon, I wrote about the story behind the 20th Century-Fox film, “Hotel for Women” (1939)—the now-obscure film that launched Darnell to stardom.
Please take a look!

Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell, Silver Screen, Nov. 1940
“Darryl Zanuck was so well pleased with the teaming of Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell in ‘Brigham Young,’ that he immediately cast them together again in ‘The Californian.’ Ty always was Linda's screen idol and for her it's all a dream come true.”

I’ve been reading about Linda Darnell’s beginning in Hollywood and am kind of amazed at the huge publicity blitz that pushed her as a brilliant new star when she was only 15-16 years old and a decent, but unspectacular actress at the time. Why her rather than so many others?
She even got to star in a semi-autobiographical picture as only her third film, less than a year after her arrival in Hollywood: “Star Dust” (1940).

June Gale, Ann Sothern and Linda Darnell in “Hotel for Women” (1939). Darnell was given the lead role in her first film. She was 15 years old, but most often the press reported her age as 17, and sometimes up to 19.

Jean Rogers, June Gale, Ann Sothern and Linda Darnell in “Hotel for Women” (20th Century-Fox, 1939)
Darnell’s first film—she does pretty well in the lead role until the film turns dramatic and her performance stays light and airy.
Based on its release date of August 4, 1939, this was likely the last picture Sothern filmed before the runaway success of “Maisie” (1939), released in late June, transformed her career.

Silver Screen, Feb. 1945 — “Linda Darnell has become a decidedly new personality since she played a siren in ‘Summer Storm.’ She's no longer the demure, sweet thing, but a fascinating glamour girl. Linda's now costarring with George Sanders in Hangover Square.”

I just watched Hangover Square (John Brahm, 1945) and rated it 5/10 ~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangover_Square_%28film%29?wprov=sfla1 #films #cinema #cinemastodon #HangoverSquare #PatrickHamilton #LairdCregar #LindaDarnell #GeorgeSanders ~ maybe would have scored higher if I hadn't just read the novel that this is nothing like!
