  1. The #UK has seen an “explosion” in insecure, low-paid #work in the past 14 years, according to a new report.

    The #TUC said its study had found that the number of people in insecure work had reached a record high of 4.1 million

    Analysis of official statistics shows number of people in precarious #employment – such as #ZeroHours contracts, low-paid self-employment & casual or seasonal work – increased ~1 million between 2011 & 2023

  2. @alexproe

    In the UK, its illegal to do so, but of course in precarious #gigecnomy & #zerohours contract settings, that's not applicable!

  3. Exploitative practices have been common across the UK's #universities - mainly through forms of #zerohours contracts often dignified by being called 'sessional work'.... now #OxfordUniversity has lost a case on the denial of employment rights to two #academics over a 15 year period in which they were employed on 'sham contracts'.

    This sort of employment is too widespread in the HE sector, so it would be good if #university HR departments took note & ended the practice

  4. For many of us #zerohours contracts are something that happens to others; we sympathise but have little direct experience of its insidious impact on life, aspirations & general #mentalhealth.

    Here's a long read, which explores one person's experience; often refusing the required subservience, Rose Atkinson says 'I don’t just want to live, I want to thrive. And I don’t think that’s too much to ask'!

    Its heartbreaking that she (like so many) is in this position!

  5. Sarah O'Connor asks in the FT, why don't people leave rubbish (exploitative) #jobs... & suggests some answers:

    Fear the next job will be worse;

    The sunk costs of building a relationship with a manager who allocates hours (in #zerohours contract);

    #publictransport limits the choice of locations you can feasibly work;

    fear of disrupting vital #benefits payments while shifting jobs;

    Benefits rules also declare leaving a job due to low pay is not a 'good reason' leading to 3 month 'sanction'!

  6. @SubtleBlade Though what #AngelaRayner said was ok

    The devil will be in the detail
    AND whether #Labour dither, wilt and collapse under the least pressure from the organisations that like zero hours contracts and poverty pay

  7. In among the latest #labourmarket data from the ONS is the following:

    Over 1.125m people were employed on a #zerohours contract between October to December 2022.

    This is an 8.5% increase on the previous quarter & represents an all time high

    Young workers, women workers and people born outside the UK are all more like to be in zero hours employment.

    Moreover, 1 in 9 workers aged between 16 and 24 (11.7% ) are now on a zero hours contract!

    The world of work is precarious for too many

  8. And then putting (early retired) returnees on #zerohours contracts is certainly not going to help given that's exactly the sort of management bullish*t that may have encouraged their exit from the labour force in the first place

    (see report below on rising numbers of over-50s on ZH contracts, the very group the 'mid-life MOT' is going to be aimed at).
