  1. IMPERMANENCE. Exploring continuous change across cultures. Edited by Haidy Geismar, Ton Otto, and Cameron David Warner #UCLPress (2022) #OpenAccess #Books

"Nothing lasts forever. This common experience is the source of much anxiety but also hope. The concept of impermanence or continuous change opens up a range of timely questions and discussions that speak to globally shared experiences of transformation and concerns for the future. Impermanence engages with an emergent body of social theory emphasizing flux and transformation, and brings this into a dialogue with other traditions of thought and practice, notably Buddhism that has sustained a long-lasting and sophisticated meditation on impermanence."

  6. Reading "Proud Boys and the White Ethnostate: How the Alt-Right Is Warping the American Imagination" by Alexandra Minna Stern (2019).

Very well written: fascinating, disturbing and revealing.

"This book seeks to expose the underlying logic and implications of white nationalism and its master plan of a racially exclusive patriarchal world. Each chapter of Proud Boys and the White Ethnostate explores a core dimension of the alt-right and white nationalism, highlighting what makes the alt-right new and old. I demonstrate how it adheres to quintessentially fascist ideas of patriarchy, hierarchy, victimhood, anti-egalitarianism, and racial and gender essentialism, manifesting them in the context of twenty-first-century America."

  7. NOTES ON TRUMPSPACE: Politics, Aesthetics, and the Fantasy of Home by David Marcus 2023 #punctumbooks

Trumpspace "argues that the fascination and horror Trump has provoked is owing in part to the way he lays bare the obsession with status, self-branding, and achievement-at-any-cost that has been part and parcel of the broader neoliberal ethos. Finally, it analyzes the January 6, 2021 storming of the US Capitol through the lens of spatio-political theorizations of settler colonial power and conceptions of home and homeland."

  12. The conservation-restoration of an artifact involves modifying it (a little or a lot).

"Conservators Delivering Change" by Jane Henderson (2022, #OpenAccess).

"Conservation interventions on objects are the most obvious changes arising in conservation practice: whether altering the rates of decay, making a repair, or revealing information, the tangible or intangible aspects are changed. Beyond this there are several realms in which conservators could deliver change: from change in their own approach and practice, leading change in teams, changing the institution and finally changing broader social structures."

  18. COMMUNICATION POWER by Manuel Castells (2009, Oxford University Press).

“Thus societies are not communities, sharing values and interests. They are contradictory social structures enacted in conflicts and negotiations among diverse and often opposing social actors. Conflicts never end; they simply pause through temporary agreements and unstable contracts that are transformed into institutions of domination by those social actors who achieve an advantageous position in the power struggle, albeit at the cost of allowing some degree of institutional representation for the plurality of interests and values that remain subordinated”

  19. DONALD TRUMP AND THE RATIONALIZATION OF TRANSGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR: The role of group prototypicality and identity advancement by Ben Davies, Carola Leicht and Dominic Abrams (2022).

    #OpenAccess

"Overall, the present study identifies the rationalization of transgressive leader behaviors as a novel pathway to their continued support. We also identify identity advancement as a key driver of this effect. These results provide an important extension of deviance credit and indicate that the role of group prototypicality in the context of group serving leaders may need to be reconsidered. These results also have worrying implications for the nature of transgressive leadership and demonstrate how unimpeachable such leadership may become once it is established."

  20. Transgression is an essential concept for understanding many of today's political dynamics.

POPULISM AS A TRANSGRESSIVE STYLE by Théo Aiolfi (2022).

"As a consequence of its performative turn, the critical literature on populism has dedicated increasing attention to its sociocultural and stylistic features. Among the most prominent concepts underpinning this approach is the notion that populism relies on the “flaunting of the low” or the use of “bad manners.” This article engages in an extensive discussion of the way this concept is used in the literature and showcases its main limitations. In replacement, I then suggest the alternative concept of transgression, understood as the violation of a norm, which has the substantial advantages of being more flexible and versatile as well as less reliant on a normative binary".

  21. THE “NEED FOR CHAOS” AND MOTIVATIONS TO SHARE HOSTILE POLITICAL RUMORS (Michael Bang Petersen, Mathias Osmundsen and Kevin Arceneaux, 2023)

"Why are some people motivated to circulate hostile political information? While prior studies have focused on partisan motivations, we demonstrate that some individuals circulate hostile rumors because they wish to unleash chaos to “burn down” the entire political order in the hope they gain status in the process. To understand this psychology, we theorize and measure a novel psychological state, the Need for Chaos, emerging in an interplay of social marginalization and status-oriented personalities."

  22. "‘BASTION OF THE SUPER-RICH’: INSIDE A NEW YORK BILLIONAIRE’S PRIVATE MUSEUM" by Francesca Carington.

"It was Fleet Week in New York City, and something unusual was taking place on Billionaires’ Row. At 9 West 57th Street, an elegant black sloping skyscraper towering over the Plaza hotel and the half-dozen sailors congregated outside, 20 people were ushered into a small, glass-fronted gallery on the ground floor. A ferocious crimson Basquiat greeted them, along with a monochrome Kline and a serene Henry Moore – works collected by the building’s late owner, the real estate mogul Sheldon Solow.

There are plenty of examples of art foundations that work well as private museums, such as Glenstone in Washington DC, the Broad in LA and the Rubell museums in Miami and DC."

  23. THE TERMS "POLITICS" OR "POLITICAL" ARE OFTEN INTERPRETED IN DIFFERENT WAYS. On this website (The Open University) there is an interesting summary of some views on the issue:
    open.edu/openlearn/society-pol

In my case, I like Chantal Mouffe's definition very much.

➡️ "Political" is "the dimension of antagonism which I take to be constitutive of human societies". This "space" of power, conflict and antagonism establishes the context where politics can develop:
➡️ "the set of practices and institutions through which an order is created, organizing human coexistence".

  24. Everyone can draw their own conclusions: "Time to invest in the art market? New 'stock exchange for art' to launch at the Victoria & Albert Museum this month" by Anny Shaw.

"Artex, a new "online stock exchange for art", offered its first initial public offering (IPO) in an event at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London last night—Francis Bacon's Three Studies for a Portrait of George Dyer. The painting last sold at auction in May 2017 for nearly $52m and will be offered to investors starting at around $55m. Dealings will begin on 21 July."
"All works of art—or art IPOs—are owned by Artex, which will issue the shares, worth €100 each. These shares can then be bought, sold or traded on a secondary market on the Artex exchange. Shareholders are limited to a 10% stake in each work; anything above that threshold triggers a takeover bid, which could be outbid."

  25. Although Bruno Latour's theories have had contradictory interpretations, he is a source of very interesting ideas and tools for understanding the world and acting politically in it (even if we do not agree with all his ideas). A highly recommended book is "War of the Worlds: What about Peace?" (2002). Available on BL's website: bruno-latour.fr/sites/default/

    "The common world we took
for granted must instead be progressively composed, it is not already constituted. The common world is not behind us and ready made, like nature, but ahead of us, an immense task which we will need to accomplish one step at a time. It is not above us, like the arbiter who mediates conflicts, it is what is at stake in these conflicts, what could become the subject of compromise—should negotiation take place. The common world is now up for grabs".

  26. #Negativeheritage can refer to places that are linked to historically painful, atrocious and/or disturbing events. They are ambivalent, as they are material testimonies of these events, but they are also rejected by a majority of society and need to be re-signified or, in more extreme cases, their destruction may be demanded. An interesting example of re-signification is the case of the #Kongresshalle, an example of #Nazi #architecture in #Nuremberg. For the creation of a Documentation Centre to show the horrors of Nazism, the building was not reconstructed, but left unfinished with the red brick exposed. In addition, a new structure was built on top of the building, placed perpendicularly, so as to simulate a "glass and steel stake" that is running through the building (Sharon Macdonald, 2006).
