  1. @MissConstrue But there are historians who claim that this dynamic is not new.

David #Graeber & David #Wengrow presented a theory of #anthropology that posits this dynamic has been present throughout history.

Civilisational flourishing is grounded in co-operation, but authoritarians eventually arrive to take it over by role-playing as if they were always a part of it. This leads to a short-lived peak.

What Graeber & Wengrow saw always followed though, was loss & ruin, not success.

Dicho de otro modo, originalmente se refería al tipo de cualidades exhibidas por las asociaciones ayllu andinas o las aldeas vascas, más que a los cortesanos incas o a los miembros del linaje Shang."

  9. #Minoan religion and arts are profoundly not interested in the self-perpetuating, power-hungry ego. What they celebrate is the opposite: the ritually-induced release from individuality, and an ecstacy of being that is overtly erotic and spiritual at the same time (ek-stasis, or “standing beyond oneself”)—a cosmos that both nurtures and ignores the individual, that vibrates with inseparable sexual energies and spiritual epiphanies.

Die überraschende Antwort lautet nein und es gibt sogar Hinweise das europäische Aufklärungs-Philosophen möglicherweise durch nordamerikanische #FirstNations beeinflusst worden sein könnten.

I have already finished reading this long and powerful book. Now I have to meditate on the ideas it brings...

"Over the course of these chapters we have instead talked about basic forms of social liberty which one might actually put into practice: (1) the freedom to move away or relocate from one’s surroundings; (2) the freedom to ignore or disobey commands issued by others; and (3) the freedom to shape entirely new social realities, or shift back and forth between different ones."

  33. Reminds me of Graeber & Wengrow's observation that lack of funding for archeological digs has skewed ancient history to be, predictably, Western-centric.

As they point out in The Dawn of Everything: "There is no 'original' form of human society. Hafted tools have been found in South Africa 80,000BC but the gap btw then and widespread evidence of figurines, flutes, burials, etc 40,000 years later is called "the sapiens paradox." Recently, it seems funding for archeologic digs explains the gap. Panga ya Saidi in Kenya around 60kBC and cave art in Borneo and Sulawesi are recent finds." #Graeber #Wengrow #archeology #DawnOfEverything

That apparatus consisted of money, property rights and the resultant pursuit of material self-interest:”
