De tweede broodvermenigvuldiging
De Damascuspoort in Gerasa, een van de steden in de DekapolisEen nieuwe zondag, een nieuw blogje over het Nieuwe Testament, en ik ga verder waar ik onlangs was gebleven. Toen behandelde ik de wonderbaarlijke broodvermenigvuldiging: het verhaal van de vijf broden en de twee vissen. Ik wees er toen op dat het Marcusevangelie nóg zo’n verhaal bevat. Het is vrijwel identiek.
Toen er op een keer weer een grote menigte bijeen was, en ze niets meer te eten hadden, riep hij de leerlingen bij zich en zei tegen hen: “Ik heb medelijden met al die mensen, want ze zijn nu al drie dagen bij me en hebben niets te eten. Als ik hen met een lege maag naar huis stuur, raken ze onderweg uitgeput; sommigen zijn immers van ver gekomen.”noot Marcus 8.1-3; NBV21.
De mensen zijn ver van huis, Jezus heeft medelijden omdat ze onvoldoende te eten hebben: dit komt precies overeen met het vorige verhaal. En zo gaat het verder: broden nemen, broden zegenen, broden breken, broden uitdelen, open commensaliteit, vissen verdelen, manden vol overblijvend eten, duizenden aanwezigen. De verschillen zijn maar klein.
Zijn leerlingen antwoordden: “Maar hoe zou iemand hen hier, in deze verlatenheid, van genoeg brood kunnen voorzien?”
Hij vroeg hun: “Hoeveel broden hebben jullie?”
“Zeven,” antwoordden ze. Hij zei tegen de mensen dat ze op de grond moesten gaan zitten; hij nam de zeven broden, sprak het dankgebed uit, brak de broden en gaf ze aan de leerlingen om ze aan de mensen uit te delen, en dat deden ze. Ze hadden ook een paar kleine vissen bij zich; hij sprak er het zegengebed over uit en zei dat ze ook de vissen moesten uitdelen. De mensen aten tot ze verzadigd waren; de leerlingen haalden op wat er van het eten overschoot: zeven manden vol. Er waren ongeveer vierduizend mensen. Toen stuurde hij hen weg. noot Marcus 8.4-9.De vraag die meteen opkomt is waarom Marcus het verhaal herhaalt. Akkoord, de evangelist was goedgelovig in de zin dat zijn relaas bol staat van de wonderlijke gebeurtenissen, en zijn topografisch inzicht is gering. Anders had hij wel geweten dat het onmogelijk is in de Dekapolis een verlaten plek te vinden. Maar Marcus is een handige auteur. De ironie van zijn evangelie, waarin al Jezus’ tegenstanders hem aanduiden als “zoon van God” en zijn leerlingen het almaar niet begrijpen, is maar één voorbeeld van een auteur die heel goed wist wat hij aan het doen was. De herhaling kan dus alleen maar opzet zijn.
Het voornaamste verschil is de locatie. Na de eerste broodvermenigvuldiging is Jezus op reis gegaan: eerst naar Tyrus, vervolgens via Sidon naar het Meer van Galilea. Dit is een kolossale omweg over het Libanongebergte, door de Bekaa en langs de berg Hermon. De weg liep dwars door het land van de Herodiaanse prins Filippos: een Jood die heerste over niet-Joden. Van het Meer van Galilea trok Jezus naar de Dekapolis, een stedelijk gebied waar opnieuw heel weinig Joden leefden. Anders gezegd: de eerste broodvermenigvuldiging vond plaats onder de Joden, de tweede onder de heidenen.
Door het zo te presenteren, neemt Marcus stelling in de discussie onder de eerste christenen: wat was de status van de niet-Joden? Behoorden zij tot het Verbondsvolk of niet? De herhaling van het verhaal, onhandig geplaatst in een verstedelijkt gebied waar je onmogelijk “in verlatenheid” kunt zijn, was geen prutswerk. Marcus maakt vrij duidelijk waar hij staat: Jezus had ook voor niet-Joden gesproken, ook zij waren welkom.
