Kibera. 82 trash points. One field day. A story five years in the making. 🗺️

In 2020, community mappers led by Nicera Wanjiru of Shack Dwellers International Kenya conducted a study across Kibera mapping waste points — their locations, sizes, and conditions. It was painstaking, ground-level work that put Kibera's waste problem on the map, literally.

In collaboration with the Optus Academy of Geoinformatics in Uganda, we held a training on #JOSM, one of the most powerful #OpenStreetMap tools for editing and quality assurance, participated by interns and the wider mapping community.

Last Sunday, we collaborated with #OpenStreetMap Zambia for an online mapathon. 💻

They supported the mapping of Towsi-Libee roads 🛣, as part of our #mappingforpeace efforts in Somalia. 🇸🇴 The data generated will be used to provide peacekeepers with topographic #maps that will help them in their tactical and operational activities.

UN Mappers Mapathon at Lodz University of Technology (TUL) 🇵🇱

On 3 March, UN Mappers held a mapathon at Lodz University of Technology in Poland. We mapped waterways 🌊 in Somalia and buildings 🏘 in Afghanistan to support peacekeeping and logistical operations.

The event is organized by CloudFerro S.A. and TUL.
