Youth Climate Mapping Externship 2026: A UN Maps Community Ambassador Initiative in Kenya 🇰🇪

Last Saturday, the #UNMappers Kenya Youth Climate Mapping Externship team went back.

Armed with #KoboToolbox and #ChatMap, the team fanned out across Sarang'ombe and Woodley to revisit those same points and see what five years had changed.

What they found was remarkable. The numbers had reduced. A significant percentage of the original trash points had been reclaimed. The community had moved the needle — through local action, not outside intervention.

In collaboration with the Optus Academy of Geoinformatics in Uganda, we held a training on #JOSM, one of the most powerful #OpenStreetMap tools for editing and quality assurance, participated by interns and the wider mapping community.

Community Mapathons in India 🇮🇳

In May, #UNMaps Community Ambassador Pawan Muddu joined online for a mapathon hosted by Tomtom. They completed mapping flood-affected and drought-prone areas in India.

In June, Pawan was invited to share about #UNMappers & #openstreetmap by Swecha, a #foss community in India. Students learned about OSM and how it can potentially be used for their projects.
