  2. What's a #neuron, how do nerves transmit signals? We can teach fully on-level high school science through creating easy-to-make yet anatomically correct models out of candy. This isn't dumbing science down; this is using all of our senses to better connect with the material: The anatomically correct candy neuron

  3. Can we do a real high school level #genetics lab using only #LEGOs? Well, yes we can! Here is the info & lab. Honors students loved it, and this was originally designed from the ground up for our #SPED students.

  5. I'm a believer in reversing the traditional vector of IEPs, scaffolding & differentiation - by that I mean, once one makes any IEP adaptations, then why not then fold those adaptations back into the general class, whenever possible?
    Much of what I originally made for students with IEPs became sought after by all my other students, and then students of other teachers, from the Honors science classes (and now from other schools.)

  6. About physical changes and chemical changes - these are important ideas for high school science. But consider this - is cutting nylon a physical or a chemical change? That's the kind of question which lets us really understand what this issue is all about! :-)

  7. Students are behind in grade level knowledge. We need easy-to-understand graphics and animated GIFs to help them more easily understand HS chemistry. To that end I made this resource about Nuclear physics and Radioactivity

  8. I'm troubled by how some high school textbooks introduce acids and bases. It is what I call the "Step one" problem - authors don't seem to lay out the simplest, most basic aspect of the issue first. Students can learn an entire chapter - but they still have troubling explaining it in their own words - which means that they don't really get it. So I created this resource for any middle school or high school science teachers

  9. I got the opportunity to design my own High School curriculum on #Evolution; sharing it with you here

    * Abiogenesis & spontaneous generation – the first (incorrect) ideas about this

    * religious teachings about Creation

    * #Abiogenesis – modern discoveries, scientific ideas

    * Charles Darwin’s Voyage of Discovery

    * Darwin’s finches

    * Fossils: Evidence of evolution over time. Dating of #fossils

    * Convergent evolution

    * Homologous and analogous structures

    * Natural selection

    * Artificial selection

    * clades & phylogenies

    * Gradualism vs. Punctuated Equilibrium

    * Is evolution a theory or a fact?

    .
    Examples of evolution

    * Chicken or the egg came first?! Seriously?

    * Evolution of the dinosaurs

    * Evolution of our kidneys

    * Classifying groups of humans: #races, #clades, #populations (using words carefully and responsibly)

    * Where did the idea of evolution develop? How has the idea changed over time?

  10. What's the difference between chlorine, chlorine, and chlorine? Glad that you asked! This is an example of where colloquial English isn't good enough to distinguish between several very different things. We make it easier to understand here -

  11. How can we bring #students who are lacking skills up to speed on producing power - the science, physics, & #environmental impact?

    * Coal, Oil, or Natural gas power

    * Nuclear fission, Nuclear fusion

    * Solar power, Hydroelectric

    * #Tidal, Wind, or #Geothermal power

    I made this graphics and animated GIF rich resource for our #ELA and #SPED students, which then became requested by college prep & honors students

    We carefully move from one idea to the next, bringing all the students up to where they need to be
