Thanks @metabrainz for tracking a great year in music.
-
Another part of my year-end retrospective playlists.
This would be the nite part of the collection. If you've ever had a wild nite, this may be familiar.
It starts normal enough, good Euro club jams, danceable but sort of dark. Then a little weirdness starts to get injected before a specific song I consider the tipping point into the full on weirdness of a great nite that's maybe gone sideways.
-
Every year I work on some playlists of tracks that came out in the year that I was really into.
I always intend it to be a jumping off point, if you like any of the tracks, you'll probably like jumping deeper into that artist.
But I also want the whole thing to flow nicely. So I usually have some kind of (very loose) theme.
This year I went for sort of a morning, day, nite idea. I'm still working on the morning and nite parts, but the day is done, ENJOY!!

5 years ago we got one of Homeboy Sandman's best albums, thanks in no small part to the production of the incredible Edan.
Homeboy Sandman has a sense of humor and intellect that comes through immensely on every album he does. This one here feels a little more fun but still has a layer of cleverness that only Homeboy Sand could pull off. And then Edan just brings the entire thing to an elevated sonic landscape.

I missed posting about the release of Rid of Me 30 years ago earlier this year in April but the 4-Track Demos release will do.
Rid of Me is an absolutely incredible, raw, in your face album. Hearing it stripped down to just Polly Jean and mostly her guitar really let's you focus on that true rawness that's seeping through the album.
-
New Kiefer today. I've been listening to this guy since I think pretty early in him releasing anything at all. He's really got killer vibes that mix some jazz piano with synths and hip hop-ish beats to make something pretty unique.
-
There's some great new releases today.
First off, Föllakzoid. They released the album V today and this is going to be a GREAT album for transitioning into fall and then winter. Very lowkey and pulsing for it's entire run. I've really grown to like this group over the past couple of years. They stay in a really satisfying pocket.
-
Another great release today, this time 25 years ago. Mercury Rev I've loved for decades now, but I always leaned into their more psychedelic and warped music.
More recently, I really dug into Deserter's Songs and it all clicked for me. It's a huge twist on a singer/songwriter album, taken to a baroque pop sound with lush arrangements and just solid songwriting and storytelling.
-
Happy 40th to a solid entry in the long history of Costello albums. Not one I put on all the time compared to others of his albums but only because there's just so much to choose from. And look at that smulder on the cover.

Another nice record store run. A classic PJ Harvey album and of course another Elvis Costello find. Turns out this Rid of Me pressing is an 'unofficial pressing' but still sounds great and is a cool white marble so I'm happy enough.
Thanks Rollin' Records Boise.

BIG DAY for a new release!! Blur are one of those legacy acts for me. I will never get tired of them no matter how long they keep things going and I'll always listen to anything past or present, if the mood strikes (which is often). The Ballad of Darren is a classic Blur album but seen through their most relaxed lens. This album is going to grow and grow on me I am sure.
-
20 years ago we got this party of an album from Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers (or whatever version of their name you choose). I found these guys late in their game by way of Duane Denison from Jesus Lizard, but man, there aren't many albums more fun than anything they do. Non-stop phsychobilly energy straight through.

5 years ago we got this beautiful ambient album from Laurel Halo. All of her work is really magnificent. I also highly recommend checking out her radio show on NTS (link below). If you're into her music, then you'll really love what she curates. It's exciting she just announced she's got a new album coming out soon.

Another day for mowing. It's getting hot out there so gotta be careful. Started with the new Bully and pulling some weeds and went from there.

15 years ago we got the first record by the fantastic modern afrobeat funk group Karl Hector & The Malcouns. Incredibly tight jams and rhythms on here. Some of their later albums incorporated some really interesting techniques and krautrock elements, but this one is straight up funky afrobeat.

Last up, I've got to bring attention to the 25 year anniversary of Street Fighter Alpha 3. This game put me on a lifelong path of being a Street Fighter diehard. I may not be great at the games, but man do I love the technicality of them. Not to mention the world it drops you into, the characters, the lore, even the music is top notch. I put this soundtrack on regularly.

Next I'll highlight a recent Gorillaz album, The Now Now. This one came out 5 years ago today. This album was really concise and with a very specific chill vibe. I could put this one on and just relax almost anytime. Plus, it's got an ode to the state I live in, one of the most beautiful tracks on the album.
-
Quite a few great releases for today. I'll start with Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty from 25 years ago. Some may say their albums, especially this one, are bloated, but I absolutely love how much they cover and pull together in a single album. The instrumentals on this thing are absolute jams.
-
Not a bad pull from the local record shop today.
Trying to grow my funk collection so Slave was a good find. And I can never pass up some vintage Costello or any Brian Eno.
Thanks Record Exchange Boise!!

Today was a helluva release day. Between Killer Mike, Boris & Uniform, Sigur Rós and Queens of the Stone Age, it was hard to choose which to highlight.
Queens it is because you really can't go wrong with them. It's a solid rock album with Homme doing what he does best. It's nothing flashy or innovative and pretty much stays in the pocket of their "thing". I'll always love them.

20 years ago, DOOM was at the height of his powers. Multiple personas, endless amounts of instrumentals, putting out nonstop gold. The word prolific undersells it. Take Me To Your Leader was one I didn't put on all that much back in the day, but only because I couldn't stop putting on some of his other releases, so it's in no way a comment on its quality. If you like DOOM, you'll like this.

Mowed the backyard today. I measure the time it takes in albums, usually some form of metal because it just makes sense.
Today took one Black Sabbath, one Goatsnake and a bit of a Queens of the Stone Age. Sabbath Blooody Sabbath, Black Age Blues and Era Vulgaris, respectively.

Odd Nosdam has been one of my favorite producers for a long time now. The most unique soundscapes this guy makes. I avoided this album for a good amount of time because it was a remix collection, that was a mistake. This album is a gorgeous odds and ends package and is an integral part of seeing the full scope of Nosdam's powers. Today's it's 15 year anniversary.
-
I'm a couple days late on this one, but it dropped 10 years ago (and a couple days). I was paying attention to Thundercat before this album, but everything seemed to fall into place on this one. Catchy as hell but still experimental and his unique personality was all over this album. Plus a song named after my favorite Wes Andreson movie? Sold!!

Best rock album release of the day (sorry Foo fans). Bully and Alicia Bognanno may not be doing the type of music that is relevant anymore, but gaw'damn they do a helluva job with it. Gets your blood pumping.

30 years ago this complete mindfuck of an album dropped. Meth of a Rockette's Kick is an absolute beautiful slow burn jam that takes things into straight chaos by the end.
-
Queens of the Stone Age, one of the most consistent groups in rock music. Even their worst album is still solid. This isn't anywhere near their worst though, I'd put it towards the top of the list and it's definitely the best of their recent career albums. This released 10 years ago. Smooth Sailing is a jaaaaaam.

15 years ago we got this masterpiece of a remake along with it's absolute killer soundtrack. A perfect homage to the 80s, corniness and all. I honestly listen to this thing regularly.

This was my entry point into being a Radiohead fan, which released 20 years ago today. I still love this album and grew to love the rest of their albums, though my general love for them waxed and waned over the years based on how pretentious my perspective of their fans were. Their cult following is surely deserved, I was just being immature and letting outside forces dictate what I liked, even if it was a sort of inverse effect.
-
This was sort of the phase where Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo's differences met in the middle and it was hard to discern one from the other without looking at how the albums were actually made. Not a knock, this album is incredibly smooth and a relaxing listen. This dropped 5 years ago today by the way.
-
Since the death of Ryuichi Sakamoto, I've been diving head first into Yellow Magic Orchestra's history. This one, Naughty Boys, came out 40 years ago today and is them at their peak post punk meets krautrock pop goodness. Such a fun 80s album.

15 years ago Dosh released the extraordinary Wolves and Wishes. I don't think Dosh ever really wanes in quality so anytning of his is worth listening to.
If you're not familiar with him he's an integral part of the Anticon lineup, his solo music is some of the best examples of the spirit of jazz infused in electronic music, but he's also worked extensively with Andrew Bird as a percussionist and drummer. Basically he's a jack of all trades and nails it.
-
Thirty (!!) years ago, Blur's second album and first signs of their ability to forever evolve, adapt and stay relevant.
-
Ten years ago, Ras G released the first volume in the brilliant Raw Fruit series. Such amazingly unique beats, so aggressive but smooth all at the same time, he really had a gift.
-
This one came out five years ago today. I don't love every Black Moth Super Rainbow album but they do have a very distinct sound at all times. This album though is their top for me. Very kickback vibes which really works with what they do.
-
Another great video game related music release 10 years ago today. The game itself was way better than it had any business being, and part of that may be due to the stellar soundtrack by Power Glove. This was my introduction to them but I listen to all of their stuff now regularly. If you're looking for 80s sci fi vibes cranked up as far as they'll go, I highly recommend.

Oh hell yes, just in time for spring to actually be hitting out here in Idaho. Jessie Ware has been absolutely killing it for so long now. Every album is just so much fun and this is no exception.
-
Fifteen years ago we got this solid release from the Swedish hip hop group the Looptroop Rockers (this was the first release where they added the Rockers to the end of their name). I forget how much I used to listen to these guys. Such great and interesting production. The bass always hits hard, but they fill in with so many abnormal textures and they always sound like they're having such a blast.
-
The first release Dylan Carlson of Earth did under his own name (previous releases were as Drcarlsonalbion) came out 5 years ago today. On the spectrum of Earth albums it's definitely on the mellow side. Really beautiful guitar tones on this, great for what I'd call a meditative state.
-
For diehard Lord Quas fans, 10 years ago was a special day. I wonder if we'll ever see Quasimoto again? Not that Madlib doesn't do enough already, but Quas was something pretty special. Dream collaboration is him showing up on a Gorillaz track. I think Murdoc and Quas would get along.

Speaking of Dopesmoker, 20 years ago this monster finally dropped the way it was intended. Happy 4/20 too y'all.
-
Five years ago today we got this random hookup of two absolute greats. Not a team up I ever would've expected but this is some grade A walls of noise.
-
Five years ago today marks the full album comeback of maybe the most legendary stoner band of all time (even if you don't agree, the story of Dopesmoker's release is one for the history books). They nailed the comeback here. Happy 4/20 everyone!!

My once a year post. Just sharing my playlists for last year. I had to break it into three this time.
They're loosely broken into themes, but VERY loose.
Anyway 2022 was quite a year, eh?
