  1. Carlton Melton - Where This Leads

    Always loved this group’s aesthetic, so this was an easy call while #crateDigging #sludge #soundtrack #riffage #vinyl @vinylrecords #nowPlaying

  2. Gong - Camembert Electrîque

Gong is a band I have heard in the background at parties, or at the record shop, but have never owned our given à careful listen. Saw this in the used bin and figured an actuel release was a good place to start. Interesting so far. Lots of notes. Lots. #vinyl @vinylrecords #crateDigging #ProgRock #jazzFusion #NowPlaying

  3. This is a shared account, so our #introduction also kind of covers why. Do not expect flow or continuity: it is hard enough to agree on what it is exactly that defines us both simultaneously instead of apart from each other.

We both come from dysfunctional working class families from #Spain, i.e. carry the generational trauma of a fascist regime whose narrative and power structures linger to this very day. Class divide is a knife that can cut any relationship apart, and resentment is the pervasive commonplace when victims and executioners have had unclear roles for almost a century. Family is a meaningless word if you have never experienced safety or love from it.

For years, we reached for each other in search of solace, to escape from our symbolic orphanages. It felt that deep from the very start, even though we had intervals where we only interacted to share self-deprecating memes. We moved together almost ten years ago, but met on #MySpace a dozen years before that. Being able to stay in touch with each other was our main motivation to use social networking sites during that time.

So we gradually stopped using them over the last decade, a process that was also stimulated by #enshittification. But we've been hoping to get back what we enjoyed from those platforms. And so far we've benefitted more from boundaries around us than between us, as we have always longed for a sense of community and the secure atmosphere that comes with it. So here we are. Together.

So yeah, being singled-out is one of those things we would like to skip over, but the Fedi is about people, so you can try from the following:

  4. QUICKSAND
    Bring On The Psychics
    2026 U.S. Ltd. Edition pressing
Dusk Blue with White Swirl vinyl

Quicksand is back, and all is right(ish) with the world again.

As a lifelong devotee of this amazing band, I could not be happier with Bring On The Psychics.

Walter is still at the top of his game songwriting-wise, the guitars are still dope as hell, and it feels like they’ve found a comfortable groove in their old age.

They’re not looking back at Slip or Manic Compression; still being in the NOW as well as pushing forward, as opposed to trying to replicate those touchstone records.

This is the third album since they’ve reunited, and ALL three have been fucking fantastic.

It’ll be a sad day when Quicksand call it a day for good.

  5. ORBIT
    Western Medicine
    1997 U.S. PROMO 7” + CD E.P.
    White vinyl

Feeling better and starting to turn the corner.
One more day of taking it easy and listening to music.

THIS is one of my prized possessions. It’s not expensive or anything, but being that I’m from #Boston , & Orbit is one of my all-time favorite hometown bands, it’s special to me.

This is a promotional item that circulated before the release of Orbit’s phenomenal album Libido Speedway.

The 7” contains two songs from the album, & the CD has the band’s signature song “Medicine” (also from Libido Speedway), plus FIVE unreleased songs NOT from that record, including a cover of Echo And The Bunnymen’s “Do It Clean”.

Found this about 20 years ago on one of my first visits back to Boston after moving to B.C..

Orbit were a great band that were horribly mishandled by A&M.

  7. THE REZILLOS
    Can't Stand The Rezillos
    2023 Australia reissue

An absolute classic from the first wave of British #punk !

It’s fast, energetic, has lots of poppy hooks, and a lot more fun than some of the super-serious political punk that came from the same time.

There’s a fistful of legitimate classics on this, from “Top Of The Pops”, “Flying Saucer Attack”, “I Can’t Stand My Baby”, and a few really high-octane cover tunes that absolutely slay.

    Absolutely essential.

  8. SHANGHAI DOG
    This Evolution
    1985 Canada pressing

For fans of independent Canadian rock from the #80s , this is a bit of a sought after record.
I found it in a thrift store in Chilliwack about a decade ago.

A killer #postpunk #newwave rock record, it’s got a political tone to it, as well as dealing with themes of social unrest and alienation, like any good #punk record should.

The bass lines on this album are killer! Those come courtesy of the great Ron Allan, who along with guitarist Mike Graham, were members of the legendary Vancouver band Subhumans.

This is the only record ever released by Shanghai Dog.
It’s so good, it’s really all you need anyway.

  9. MODEST MOUSE
Good News For People Who Love Bad News
    2011 U.S. 2xLP reissue

Such a great album that I revisit SEVERAL times a year.

I have a LOT of memories, both good AND bad, attached to this record. Major life events were scored by these songs over the course of three years, and even the bad ones are looked upon now with a sense of warmth and a little bit of resolve.

I’m not what you would call a diehard Modest Mouse fan. I like a handful of songs scattered over some of their albums, but in all honesty, this is the only record of theirs I’ll ever need or have any real emotional connection to.

Just an incredible record, through and through.

  10. THE WAR ON DRUGS
    Slave Ambient
    2011 U.S. 2xLP
    @ #45rpm

A band I’ve always liked, but I’m still waiting on them to make an album as good as this one from front to back.

Lost In The Dream came close, but there’s some clips or songs on that one, whereas this is pretty much a perfect record start to finish.

“Come To The City” is such a good tune, as is “Baby Missiles”, which is one my band and I have tacked on to the end of our sets when our originals have been exhausted, and we need to stretch it out for a few extra minutes.

Really great record from a very good band. I think at this point in their career, it’ll always be my favorite.

  11. JAMES WHITE AND THE BLACKS
    Off-White
    1979 Canada pressing

Another great one from the “ #nowave ” pile from yesterday, one of a handful of James Chance-related records.

This takes the music made with The Contortions and reframes it through groovy dance music.
It’s still weird (because everything Chance did had a bit of weirdness to it), just a little more disco. 😂

Punks and art-punks at the time had a universal disdain & hostility for dance music.
Here, Chance gave them something they could get behind. Angular guitars, #avantgarde #jazz rhythms, all mixed over very danceable and hypnotic drums.

It was a very divisive album when it came out, but it’s now recognized as an underground cult classic.

It’s been great to hear all these Chance-related albums again these last few days. They just don’t pop up in my neck of the woods that often.

  12. Alice Coltrane - Reflection On Creation And Space (A Five Year View)

I don’t always listen to Coltrane, but when I do I tend to prefer my Coltrane Alice. Saved from the cheap bin today. Someone clearly sold a collection to the shop and I think grandpa was a huge Coltrane fan. At least a couple dozen titles in the bins. #crateDigging #vinyl @vinylrecords #jazz #spiritualJazz #Nowplaying

  13. JAPAN
    Tin Drum
    1981 Canada pressing

While I was at my local shop this morning, a gentleman came in to sell about 30 of his records.
I ended up buying ALMOST all of them.

    Along with the No New York compilation I posted earlier, it was all made up of #obscure #nowave , #punk , #postpunk , #newwave , #synthpop , and #experimental #artrock from the late #70s and early #80s .

This was one that I was very excited about. I’ve never owned a CLEAN original Tin Drum on vinyl before, and I’m SIKED.

I’m a big fan of Japan (and of David Sylvian) in general, and Tim Drum was the first album by Japan I ever heard.
I was so mystified by it, that I instantly set off on finding others, which lead me to working backwards towards Adolescent Sex, Obscure Alternatives, Quiet Life and Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

“Ghosts” is an incredible tune. It still gives me goosebumps.

  14. VARIOUS ARTISTS
    No New York
    1978 U.S. pressing

The crown jewel of today’s finds from downtown; a PRISTINE original upgrade copy from my unlistenable beat-to-shit one, and one of the most influential compilations ever.

The NYC “no wave” scene didn’t last long, but Brian Eno was ALL about it, after witnessing some of the bands at an art space in Manhattan.

Eno wanted to record these very out of the box bands for posterity, and opted to do it in a very “live” off-the-cuff manner.

4 bands contributing 4 songs each, it is a pivotal document of what was happening in the late-70s NYC underground.

The Contortions (more on them later), Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, Mars, and D.N.A.; all envelope pushers in the best sense of the phrase.

I’ve been wanting an original CLEAN copy of this for a long time, so today was like Christmas.

Please don’t tell my wife I spent $450.00 on records this morning.

You keep THAT a secret, and I won’t tell YOUR family about that thing YOU did.

  16. ULTRAVOX
    Vienna
    1980 Canada pressing

A stone cold classic before I head out and start my Monday.

One of my favorite #80s records that I will never tire of.

I know diehards prefer the earlier #70s Ultravox records, but Vienna is the one for me.

The first one with Midge Ure on it, replacing the departed (he left, he didn’t die) John Foxx.

Full of really great tunes, and one of the defining albums of the early eighties #synthpop genre.

One of my all-time favorite fun and ridiculous facts:
The title track, unquestionably the band’s biggest song, reached #2 on the UK singles chart.

The song that kept it from being #1?

    Joe Dolce’s “Shaddap You Face”.
    😂

Apparently, good taste was on vacation in 1980.

  17. DEFTONES
    Around The Fur
    2011 U.S. reissue

    More Deftones!

I remember how excited I was when this came out in ‘97. I had just spent a year and a half obsessing over Adrenaline, and was really hoping that Around The Fur would be just as good.
    Was it ever.

Not only was it good, it was superior in EVERY way, and took a huge creative leap forward.

It is somehow HEAVIER, but also super atmospheric and dreamy.
It’s more melodic, the guitars are down-tuned and absolutely pummeling, and Chino’s lyrics and voice are emotional and soaring.

This is their first GREAT record, and it would only get better from here, because White Pony was on the horizon.

I still feel like The Deftones are underrated.
They’re huge, and people love em, but I feel it’s not enough.

  18. THE MUPPETS
The Muppet Movie (Original Soundtrack Recording)
    1979 Canada pressing

The Muppets were a pivotal part of my childhood.
From The Muppet Show to the subsequent movies, those characters and songs are tattooed on my heart and soul forever.

Until today, it was the only soundtrack of the initial run of movies (Movie, Caper, Manhattan, Christmas Carol) that I didn’t own on vinyl.

Regardless of how you feel about The Muppets, this is worth owning solely for Paul Williams’ “Rainbow Connection”, just a stunningly beautiful song regardless of how old you are.

An even bigger bonus is that this was a used copy that STILL had the movie poster inside of it. They’re almost always missing.

If I were to ever adopt a child, I’d want it to be Animal.

  19. DEFTONES
    Adrenaline
    2022 U.S. reissue

From the beginning, I never understood why they got lumped in with all of those inferior shithead “nu metal” bands.

For starters, they were first out the gate, and were around before any of those asshole bands reared their very ugly heads (and music).

Musically, DEFTONES were always a far more interesting and dynamic band. Amongst all those pummeling guitars and pounding drums was always an incredible sense of melody and songcraft.

I was a fan of them right from the start. As a junior in high school, I was instantly obsessed with Adrenaline.
Their very first record, it’s far from their best. It is however, one of my two favorites.

Chino is an incredible front man, and as a live act, they’ve always been just MAMMOTH.

My love for this band will never waiver. And it all started here.

    2009 U.S. 2xLP reissue

Rockin’ some jazzy boom-bap from the fuckin goats.

Check Your Head will always be my favorite Beasties album. It is a flawless magnum opus and in my mind, the greatest #HipHop album ever.

Ill Communication is not far behind. Sometimes, I just need to hear it.

  22. THE SEVENTY SEVENS

    1984 U.S. pressing

    A fantastic #newwave -y #alternative record from the land of 1984.

I liberated this from my basement this morning. I have no earthly idea how it would have ended up down there, because I LOVE this record.

Really catchy, super-infectious well-written songs with jangly guitars and subtle synths.

Really fun record that has been returned to its proper place in the library.

  23. YOSUKE YAMASHITA AND ADELHARD ROIDINGER
    Inner Space
    1977 Germany pressing

It’s hot as hell on the island today, so I’m content to just chill inside today and stay cool while listening to music.

A warm, spacious and atmospheric #jazz record between two masterful improvisers.

In the case of Yamashita, this is far more mellow and refined than his previously intense and raw works. It’s quite reflective and intimate sounding, and perfect for a day like today.

I think that even people who don’t appreciate jazz at all can throw this on and appreciate how rich and great it sounds.

    Side question, though.

    Who names their kid “Adelhard”?

  24. KARL ERIKSON
    Aerogramme
    1973 Canada pressing

An earthy, organic #folk #countryrock record, Aerogramme was one of the first handful of records I bought after moving to Canada.

Fantastic organic sounding #70s production, but that wouldn’t mean anything if the songs weren’t any good, and these are great tunes. Wonderfully constructed, all anchored by Erikson’s familiar sounding and comforting voice.

All three of Erikson’s albums are great, but this one is the one for me.

Since leaving the music business, Erikson has worked in Australia as an Associate Professor of Contemporary Communication at Central Queensland University, He has been an academic researcher, ethnomusicologist & producer in Australia, where he has spent decades studying and documenting Indigenous music and culture.

If he was my teacher, I’d only ask questions about Aerogramme.

  25. VARIOUS ARTISTS
All Ears (10 New And Original Hits With A CB Theme)
    1977 U.S. pressing

Quite the ridiculous record that I just couldn’t pass up, because it looked JUST like my kinda stupid.

Made for Radio Shack in the mid #70s , this is a collection of songs that all have a CB theme to them.

Rock, jazz, R&B, gospel, soul… this thing is ALL over the place, but all the songs drive down the Citizens Band 2-Way radio highway.

In all honesty, there’s some pretty good tunes on here. “Honey Bee (Please Answer Me)” by Randy Goodrum is a particular standout for me, as is “Everybody's Somebody (In Our C.B. World)” by Ed Bernet.

    For only $1.00, I couldn’t go wrong.
Pretty entertaining shit, straight down to the “Index Of Terms Used By CB’ers” on the back cover.

    10-4, good buddy.

The Goonies 'R' Good Enough b/w What A Thrill
    1985 Canada 7” pressing

A killer find from my trip downtown today!

This song is forever tattooed on my childhood due to its affiliation with one of my all-time favorite movies, The Goonies.
Every time I hear it, I’m transported right back to that movie theatre where I saw it on opening weekend in Milford, Ma.

Both the record AND picture sleeve are in immaculate shape, and I’ve never owned one before where BOTH were intact. I either saw the sleeve either no record, or the record in just a shitty plain paper sleeve.

    Pure sentimental #80s joy, man.
