  1. September 11, 1973

Military coups toppled Chilean President Salvador Allende (1970–73) after his socialist reforms threatened U.S. interests. General Augusto Pinochet's forces bombed the Presidential Palace, arrested thousands, and murdered their political rivals. Pinochet's subsequent 17-year dictatorship unleashed torture, disappearances, and exile on a massive scale as the U.S. openly backed the regime to "save Chile from communism."

Chile’s democracy didn't return until 1990, and Pinochet retained influence long afterward. Historians now view the 1973 coup as a premeditated, U.S.-fueled assault on Chilean democracy and anti-globalization movements. Allende died defending Chileans’ right to self-determination—a legacy that reminds us democracy is fragile and must be actively defended against foreign interference and authoritarianism today.

  2. This fucking inequality is going to reach a breaking point soon/is just about there. Economically, shit's fucked for everyone who isn't rich...

    Prices are fucked.
    Wages are fucked.
    Jobs are fucked.
    Housing is fucked.
    Healthcare is fucked.
    Mental health is fucked.
    Education is fucked.
    Media is fucked.
    Trust is fucked.
    "Democracy" is fucked.
    Justice is fucked.
    Basic human rights are fucked.
    Migration is fucked.
    Climate is fucked.
    Nature is fucked.
    Transportation is fucked.
    Technology is fucked (#enshittification).
    Internet is fucked.
    Privacy is fucked.
    Debt is fucked.
    Assistance programs are fucked.
    Safety nets are fucked.
    (...did I miss anything?)

Meanwhile, wall street thrives. Billionaires are on their way to becoming trillionaires. Public services are either quickly disappearing or being rapidly privatized. Surveillance and fascism are normalized. Liberties and choices are minimized. This is looking more and more like an asymmetric #collapse—at minimum. Stability for elites, precarity for the rest of us.

However.... It’s easy to go full doomer, but we’re only fucked if we don’t work together.

And while some things are out of our control, we can continue to improve things which are within our reach. Building networks of care. Sharing resources. Practicing liberatory living (free from domination, dependency, and isolation).

As much as possible, let's rely on each other, not capitalism or government. Reject hyper-individualism because survival (and thriving) is a collective effort. If we cannot rely on the failing system we must work outside of it. Mutual aid, community infrastructure, labor and tenant organizing, unconventional and yeah sometimes even "unlawful" solutions (#BeGayDoCrime), etc!!!

Learn new skills, meet new people/"strangers" (note to self #IntrovertProblems), practice radical empathy (love is punk as fuck), reject hate, share with each other, gather with each other, connect with nature, be 𝓬𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓿𝓮, be curious, and have backup plans (if only concepts of plans), etc etc! (...did I miss anything?)

The system may be failing, but we don’t have to fail with it. Everything’s fucked, except our ability to care for each other.

  3. Day 12 of the road trip took me from Esperance to Hyden, WA. As an old Aggie I loved travelling through tens of thousands of hectares of canola and wheat crops. Found this great bit of silo art by Jerome Davenport in Varley. #RoadTrip #SiloArt #StreetArt

  4. Arbitrary bullet points from recent cDSA meetings...

    LGBTQ

Anti-Trans Legislation: Across the U.S., 118 bills targeting transgender individuals were passed or are being considered in 2025, with our state proposing 10 of these.

Abortion Access: Despite Ohio’s constitutional protection for abortion rights, politicians may attempt to override voters. HB370 particularly threatens abortion access.

Sanctuary city resolutions: We're interested in protecting gender-affirming healthcare and resisting enforcement of anti-trans laws.

ELECTORAL: Democracy has the potential to loosen the grip of the current city council’s restriction of reforms. To do this, we’re looking into a city charter amendment.

NYC: Zohran’s campaign framed socialism as a practical solution to housing costs and police brutality. This elevated existing narrative of socialism, allegedly being impractical. By associating socialism with affordability, his campaign has re-invigorated the people's optimism for liberal-left alliances.

  5. Goorambat is not far from Benalla where Melbourne based artist Jimmy Dvate has painted a number of silos. Though they may seem generic, the images represent specific horses and birds. #RoadTrip #SiloArt #StreetArt

  6. Melbourne street artist Cam Scale painted the silos in Devenish, Victoria. The paintings feature military medical personnel including a modern depiction #SiloArt #RoadTrip #StreetArt

  7. Local artist Tim Bowtell also painted the silos in St James. These towns are very small ( pop. 132 ) so the dozen motorists and the same number of cyclists who were there today add significantly to the town's economy. #RoadTrip #SiloArt #StreetArt

  8. @bitprophet seems very similar to what @UniversalBlue is doing, especially with #Bluefin. But so far I love using Bluefin. I do also love #Debian so might try VanillaOS on another computer or VM.

But yeah still looking to experiment with a headless immutable #homelab server OS that is, first of all, easy to install, and second, easy to manage (e.g. via Cockpit). I think Universal Blue’s #uCore does a lot of that but it’s confusing to install unless I’m just an idiot (likely).

  9. CW: Food

My favourite thing about winter in these southern climes, is putting a vegetable curry into the slow cooker. After eight hours it does a couple of serves that night plus half a dozen serves into the freezer for travel meals. #cooking #cookingau

  10. Someone made a good point! When I say The Hobby I mean miniature painting, diorama making, and sculpting. This wee fella saw me get second place in a competition last year.

  11. It’s been a while since I've posted directly on @babka about our work on #SocietyofRafa (@rafa), a #Jewish inspired #TTRPG about community healing. Thought this is a good enough time than any to give #Babka folks an update. 🧵 1/6:

    1. Our artist Kelly Ronveaux created some absolutely wonderful art, including the cover art, that brings the world to life.

    2. We launched our new website using the fantastic logo and branding guidelines by Maycon Prasniewski. societyofrafa.com/

    3. We've met incredible people through our beta testing sessions. We're using the feedback to improve the game and correct some mistakes.

Some of the most meaningful comments have been from #Jews and Jews in progress who said they felt at home or that the game is the wish fulfillment they craved. Some beta testers are in the progress of becoming collaborators!

  12. Road tripping this week. Today in the Snowy Mountains at Tumut. Lovely camp next to the river. #RoadTrip #Tumut

Friday beers are the best beers. Bounty Hunter is a choc coconut dark ale from Tumut River Brewing Company at the Thirsty Devil Brewery #craftbeer #fridaybeers

  15. Dr Karl Kruszelnicki on 40 years talking about science on the ABC, fighting fake news and saving a life

Suddenly, a commercial TV show started pushing the idea that, 'hey, vaccines didn't really work', especially whooping cough.
