Military coups toppled Chilean President Salvador Allende (1970–73) after his socialist reforms threatened U.S. interests. General Augusto Pinochet's forces bombed the Presidential Palace, arrested thousands, and murdered their political rivals. Pinochet's subsequent 17-year dictatorship unleashed torture, disappearances, and exile on a massive scale as the U.S. openly backed the regime to "save Chile from communism."
Chile’s democracy didn't return until 1990, and Pinochet retained influence long afterward. Historians now view the 1973 coup as a premeditated, U.S.-fueled assault on Chilean democracy and anti-globalization movements. I don't know why I am drawn to revisit the 9/11 attacks, but I am. I talked to my kids about it, and I found one kid friendly video about it and showed it to them. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hgP_XsAzeRo My kids were curious about it. My older son (7 years old) asked why the attackers did it.

It was super powerful. Lots of footage of people trying to survive in the chaos of that day. Examples of heroism too.I am grateful to those who tried to help on that day. It is a reminder of what really matters.

24 years ago today, America fell.
It took a while to finish happening, but in the end, bin Ladin won.
Not because of the attack itself. But because of our reaction. It galvanized all the wrong people: Nationalists, neocons, Christian fundamentalists hell bent on starting religious wars... All had been working to grow for years, but the attack kicked the all into high gear.

One of the things that continues to haunt me about #September11 is the unimaginable decision made by some to leap to their death rather than be burned alive. I can't imagine being faced with such a terrifying decision. It's beyond tragic.
