In my opinion El-Sayed's comparison was absolutely appropriate.
(Yes, 9/11 was a deliberate deadly attack; COVID was "just" denied and mishandled for right-wing political gain. Hundreds of thousands of people would still be alive if we had had a functional, decent administration in the US at the time, with basic respect for fellow human beings, as opposed to Trump & co.)

I don't know why I am drawn to revisit the 9/11 attacks, but I am. I talked to my kids about it, and I found one kid friendly video about it and showed it to them. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hgP_XsAzeRo My kids were curious about it. My older son (7 years old) asked why the attackers did it.

It was super powerful. Lots of footage of people trying to survive in the chaos of that day. Examples of heroism too.I am grateful to those who tried to help on that day. It is a reminder of what really matters.
