    Today reminded me about the beforetimes when I used to have many good discussions with my old Ph.D supervisor before he turned tragic. One that stuck concerned young me fawning over memory vulnerability exploitation and mechanism-targeted mitigations. He suggested that I should venture further down that road but to first look for 'free-range dumb' and use that as input to problem definitions and countermeasure construction. 'When you run out of that you can return to flipping bits'. 20 years later I have yet to run out.
