Kirjassa kootaan ensimmäistä Oxford English Dictionarya ja tekijät saavat välillä palautetta puuttuvista sanoista. Täydellistä sanakirjaa ei siis vieläkään ole saatu kasaan vaikka OED:tä tehtiin jo 1800-luvulla 😁
Yksi puuttuvista sanoista on bondmaid, orjatyttö, jonka kirjan päähenkilö Esme on pikkutyttönä poiminut talteen leksikografien työpöydän alta. Isompana hän alkaa ymmärtää, että sanakirjan sisältö on muutenkin valikoitunut aika miehiseksi. Olen vasta kirjan alkupuolella ja olen tykännyt siitä tähänkin asti, mutta luulen että nyt se vasta pääsee vauhtiin kun sanojen löytämiseen ja valintaan tulee yhteiskunnallinen ja feministinen taso.
