Tras siete años fuera de la pantalla grande, Star Wars vuelve al cine con “The Mandalorian & Grogu”, la película dirigida por Jon Favreau que buscará transformar el éxito del streaming en un nuevo fenómeno cinematográfico global.

En su primer día en salas de cine la cinta recaudó 102 millones de dólares. De acuerdo a un análisis de Spoiler, la película necesitaría recaudar entre 450 y 550 millones de dólares mundiales para ser considerada financieramente exitosa

La última entrega estrenada en salas fue “Star Wars: Episodio IX – El Ascenso de Skywalker”, una cinta que superó los mil millones de dólares, pero que también evidenció el desgaste creativo y la división entre crítica y fandom.

The Mandalorian & Grogu | Movie Review

I went for the first of what will be many viewings of The Mandalorian & Grogu on Thursday night. This is such a fun movie. If you like The Mandalorian TV show… or Dad Movies, you’re going to enjoy this movie. What I’m saying is that this is A Star Wars Dad Movie™. Spoilers ahead…

While Mando was expectedly awesome, this movie was about Grogu really choosing who he wants to be.

When I saw the first 30 minutes of The Mandalorian & Grogu, I knew that it was going to be a great action movie. That first half hour of Din just mowing through those B-rate Imperials was exciting to watch, but I knew from the various interviews in the lead-up to the release that Grogu was going to get his time to shine.

Boy, did he.

There’s been a lot of complaining in some of the early reviews that there’s no “character arc” or “moving the Star Wars story forward” arc in the movie, but I wholeheartedly disagree.

The second half of this movie is about Grogu choosing who he wants to be. Sure, he chose to go back with Din in that episode of The Book of Boba Fett. This movie, however, is about Grogu deciding that he’s not just a scared little boy hanging out with his Mandalorian dad. Grogu is a fighter and a warrior. He very clearly chooses that path in this movie and it was so much fun to see. Our baby boy is growing up.

I think being a dad has made me appreciate bonds between dads and their kids and movies and shows a lot more these days. Never really had a fear that Din was going to die in this movie, everything Grogu does while he’s incapacitated was adorable.

As a lore whore…

While the movie didn’t expound upon the Empire very much beyond a few really cool things, that did spend time building the underworld and Outer Rim.

One of the things I was quite excited about was that the Droid Gotra played such a large role in the movie. I thought it was a very cool concept and it was created for publishing, and it’s really great to see that come over into live action (animation would have been cool, too).

I can’t wait to see where the Gotra pop up again. A criminal syndicate that is full of only droids who are hardcore supporters of droid rights? Give me more.

They let the artists cook.

The puppetry and stop-motion animation in this movie were so fantastic. There were times where I was stunned at how great Grogu and some of the Anzellans were. You can tell they spent time perfecting the movements for these characters and it really made them feel more alive in this movie than any of the episodes of the show before this. will say that some of the CGI did look a little off. Specifically, some of the CGI characters looked a little off in the daylight as expected. That’s been a problem for CGI for a long time now, and to me it really affected Zeb and Rotta in different scenes.

I got to go see roughly the first half hour of The Mandalorian Grogu on May 4th in IMAX! It was a really cool experience at my local AMC.

The free tickets came through for the worldwide(?) audience at IMAX theaters thanks to Disney. They gave out free posters and had security roaming the theater after threatening to kick people out if they had their phone out during the screening.

The Mandalorian’s violence is ratcheted up from the TV show.

Honestly, a little part of me was surprised at the violence. Yes, Star Wars is full of violence. I get that. In the half hour that I saw, Mando probably shoots anywhere from three to five stormtroopers right in the face.

No, the violence wasn’t over the top or beyond the movie’s PG-13 rating, but it felt like the movie is “aging up” with its main group of kids that grew up with the show starting a little more than 6 years ago.

This is a regular occurrence with Star Wars shows. Especially looking back at how Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels evolved with their audiences throughout the seasons.

The action was really good, and I can’t wait to see more.

I love when you’re watching a movie in an IMAX theater, and the frame expands to fit the full screen.

When The Mandalorian & Grogu expands to fill the screen, it’s incredible. The opening 15 minutes or so was absolute proof that this belongs on the big screen. I don’t think you could look any better than it did.

My one concern…

I was doing some thinking about this movie last night, and I figured out what my one concern is about everything.

The movie is fast. The pace moves. From what I saw, there’s very little time to breathe before the next thing happens. That could very well change once you get past the 20% that I saw.

My one concern is whether or not people who have never seen The Mandalorian will be missing out on the relationship of Din Djarin and Grogu.

That relationship is key to the whole movie working. Fingers crossed.
