Woah. #Zynthian firmware now works OOTB on a Pi 4 with the official touchscreen. I tried this a few years ago and got nowhere. I am very excite! #linuxmusic

A few short vids from the debut of Schoolbus Bob yesterday at a Canada Day pancake breakfast. The drummer and I (and also the person who put on the breakfast and took the vids) are all School Bus drivers. We play Weird Al-style parodies about Schoolbus stuff exclusively.
There was an attempt to use my #Zynthian for an Electric Avenue cover, but this being a Free Software device, there was naturally a problem with the driver for my Launchpad, so I was hitting the wrong pads and the loops were not really properly constructed, so it was a well-documented and rather funny trainwreck. When things are falling apart onstage, I go for the laugh, and generally people are happy with the show. I believe I have occasionally convinced them it was all staged.
I am very grateful to have gotten hooked up with Don, cause he's a shuffle demon - he can do any beat, and he picks up on all my body language, I barely need to look at him to get him to do a stop or whatever, he's amazing.
To illustrate, this show had a laughable small amount of rehearsal, and I'm mostly pretty happy with it, and that's mostly because Donnie was there. Indeed, the clip of Stuck In The Middle, which is just a straight playing of the song, is from the soundcheck (most of the audience was already there lol) and we had never played that together before.
Anyways, there will be more from Schoolbus Bob, including our forthcoming album, Oh By The Way, Which One's Bob?

edit: it glitched out on adding three videos to this toot, so the other two videos are in replies which will be added momentarily

I love Linux devs. You never see this kind of fun-having on commercial devices.

@NMBA Honestly, you're either already onboard or you're sick of hearing it, but, look to Open Source Hardware running Linux, which has happened once or twice, but imperfectly.
The problem isn't even so much the hardware, cause honestly, I could open up my #Zynthian and show you the sophistication of which amateurs(? I'm not actually sure what his day job is 😂 ) like @jofemodo are capable now (granted, relying on the usual supply chains). A pocket-size device with an information screen that does all the standard phone computer things, all the basics we use them for, is actually somewhat trivial.
I couldn't honestly say whether it's the apps that people are addicted to and we can't be sure would port to a standard Linux or Android (same thing really) phone, whether that's the problem, or what, that keeps people from executing this plan. A standard for everyone to follow using off the "shelf" (read: Chinese factory) components and a willingness to use it is all that would be needed. If someone paid our bills and gave me a hardware budget I'd get to work on it today, I ain't so stupid I'm just poor and ragged....

@Linux_in_a_Bit I make it known to everyone I know that if and when they are ready to try out Linux, I am available as their on-call nerd anytime they run into trouble.
Very few takers. I did introduce some musician friends to #Zynthian and they bought one, but that's just cause it's an amazing project/product. They (musical couple) are now running Linux on one of their PCs, but they didn't need to ask for help lol

@jwcph As long as we have General Purpose computing (which is currently getting squeezed as hard as they are able and by no means guaranteed without some fighting in the future) Free Software running on said machines handles this well. I'm a #Zynthian user/fan, and they are constantly integrating new engines, including some amp and pedal modellers.
But as far as devices from commercial manufacturers, yes.

Google did something good, I am obligated to say so.
As we all know, results from google lately have started with their Slop machine at the top.
I have today all to myself, as it turns out, so I'm working on setting up an integrated guitar/synth rig by combining my Pi5 running #Zynthian with my Boss GP-10 (a formidable device all on its own) as the sound device, which thanks to kernel devs will offer all six strings as discrete input channels along with its stereo aux input.
Anyways, I couldn't remember what the minimum kernel version was for the GP-10 (it's 5.12) or what Zynthian currently uses (6.something) so I googled, and they actually put the link to an old question I posted a long time in a forum about this topic, above the Slop Machine. Like, the most useful link, the one with the answer I was seeking, was at the top of the results.
Not that this fury of ours should stop until they are completely cowed into Full Adversarially-Interoparable Submission. They need to be wearing a collar and leash, in the hands of the fucking EFF. Guillotines!

edit: replaced YT link to the non-remastered version where you can fucking hear the bass

@geerlingguy A #Zynthian is central to my keyboard rig; sad to think that even in a future non-Fascist USA, I might have to turn down a gig for this mayor.

Finally going to call my DIY #Zynthian "Done". Just did a little jam with it. Pretty sweet to have drums, synth, and an entire guitar effects chain including amp modeler and cabinet IR all in a single module, and able to record with it. Still a lot to learn and a long way to go, but now it makes noise. And I can run the whole thing on a battery, which is pretty sweet.

I feel like none of my projects are timely (or ever completed for that matter), but the band is planning to start writing again. I'm imaging a lot of big band sounds, so I got a Zynthian to serve as an "orchestra in a box" for shows.
Hoping to use it with the keytar I'm designing to trigger backing tracks and things. Fun kit to put together.

It's been a while and much has changed in life, but I feel it's time to get back into the "improvised ambient" mindset. So here we go.
Also, I recently got a #Zynthian, which has been an inspiration. It is used in a limited fashion here.

I hope you enjoy it!

well this a project that absorbed way more time than I planned. mcp23017 and encoders to control raspberry pi running #Zynthian. turns out the only solid core wire I had on hand was just red or 0.1mm magnet wire. but it's 99% done. just need the ground bus, but thats tomorrow's problem.

Just assembled a #zynthian v5.1 and added a tiny NVMe hat (per a post in the Zynthian forum[1]) and I've got it booting successfully off a Corsair MP600 Mini. It's based on a Phison controller which I feared was going to be a problem for the Pi 5 but it turned out to not be an issue.

I have tried to get #zynthian working with a Pi4 and the official 7" touchscreen but nothing appeared on screen. Has anyone else had any luck getting this working?

Just saw that LV2 audio plugins (used kn #Zynthian and elsewhere) manifests uses #RDF, in the Turtle format.
Yes RDF from the #SemanticWeb #semweb
How cool and crazy is that!? A real use of RDF in the wild!

This is not beginner-friendly at all, but consider building a homebrew #Zynthian synthesizer.
There is a custom hardware device which is sold at https://zynthian.org/ and which I own one of, but the associated OS is very friendly to minimalization.
A Raspberry Pi and any USB audio interface is enough to get a Zynthian up and running, with a VNC interface. Add a <$100 touchscreen and you've got a very functional dev.
If interest is lost, Pi & screen are still useful in many ways.

Left my #Zynthian sitting a long time, running update now, seems to be going okay but will not be surprised if I have to do a fresh image...

Ja, Jack sollte natürlich laufen - speziell #Jack2, wegen #netjack2
https://github.com/jackaudio/jackaudio.github.com/wiki/WalkThrough_User_NetJack2

Zynthian V5.1
I’m still playing catch-up on a lot of things, and I just noticed Zynthian upgraded to the Raspberry Pi 5. The kit is on the expensive side (even without factoring in the Pi itsel(...)

If you're nerdy, check out #Zynthian - it has a looper built in, along with a galaxy of synths, DSPs, effects, etc...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPQT5gviZbo
edit: I own one btw, but have been using homebrew ones for years. Finally bought a kit when the V5 came out. I'm Canadian, I paid <$1k CAD all in. It works well, but you need to flash an SD card and such.
Other keys player in my band who is not nerdy, bought one after seeing me using mine. It's a marvel. Small dev team but hard at it.

Hifiberry just released an 8channel card today, in beta anyways. I have some birthday money I'll be spending this morning.
If your idea of fun is to think about muxing pins, any ol device will do.
If, on the other hand, you're a kiosk designer and you're super duper keen on integrating immersive sound experiences into your kiosks, you have a singular best choice now.
In my case, I'll be experimenting with a multi-output #Zynthian - hopefully @jofemodo is ordering one too. :>
-
Very chuffed to have come across #zynthian (thanks @jpaskaruk for the prompt). Nice to find a use for an old raspberry pi, here running a looper synced externally to MIDI clock. Some great synths & samplers too, while the sequencer looks very capable.
-
I play keys in bands and there is a similar dynamics between every name brand device and #Zynthian
Not that it's ready for every player, but what you get for what you pay is so ridiculously better
