  3. Bill Shaner wrote for Worcester Magazine until Gatehouse Media bought them. He's a good writer and he continues to write about Worcester on his Substack. You deserve to read it.

  4. Support Tom Marino and Worcester Press Freedom!
"Tom Marino has a GoFundMe for his upcoming legal battle against Crybaby Tommy (aka Thomas B. Duffy), the police union official suing him for $10,000,000 in a laughable defamation lawsuit. The Telegram finally wrote about it the other day! You can find that here (archive.ph/aPzLA) and my coverage from last week here (worcestersucks.email/p/this-is). But if you’re going to click one link make it the one to Tom’s GoFundMe. I put in $100 and maybe you can too? The point of this lawsuit is to put someone who can’t afford a legal battle through a legal battle. A guy that gets paid by the city should not be doing this but I think we’ve established by now that the city manager is not functionally the boss of the police, and especially has no power over a police union official."

  5. #OTD (Dec 08) in 1959, authorities note a large meeting of #Massachusetts, #RhodeIsland and #Connecticut gambling racketeers at a restaurant in #WorcesterMA and a smaller meeting at a nearby hotel.

  6. Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks, Everybody’s Rockin’, 1983 on Geffen

Credited (as you can see on the cover and the labels) to Neil Young but also to Neil and the Shocking Pinks, this was Neil’s rockabilly album, with a band assembled just for this purpose.

I realize I’m something of a Neil Young completist, but I really enjoy this album, short as it is.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is a 1983 Carrollton pressing from the Columbia House Record Club (noted on the rear jacket).

  7. Checking out the BonChon place today and will update on the food. It's a chicken place right across from the street and I stan trolling the Chik-Fil-A #worcester #worcesterma #food

  8. Japan, Japan, 1982 on Epic

Compilation album released (in the US) on Epic in 1982, bringing together most of Tin Drum plus some from Gentlemen Take Polaroids. (Neither of those was formally released in the US until 1994). I’ve got a UK Tin Drum but still looking for a good vinyl copy of Gentlemen.

One the best underrated bands of the era – though I feel like now people have come to understand how wonderful they are. David Sulvian in particular is just a master.

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is a Terre Haute pressing.

  9. Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Zuma, 1975 on Reprise

Seventh studio album from Neil Young, and the first credited with Crazy Horse after Danny Whitten died in 1972.

The individual song credits have two songs not attributed to Crazy Horse: “Pardon My Heart” (credited just to Neil Young) and “Through My Sails” (credited “with Crosby, Stills & Nash”).

“Cortez the Killer” is a 7 and a half minute epic, and “Danger Bird” is also nearly 7 minutes – but this is Neil and Crazy Horse in full form and they sound great.

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is an original Santa Maria pressing on orange Reprise labels.

  10. Michelle Shocked, Captain Swing, 1989 on Mercury

This was Shocked’s third LP and the follow up to the massively successful Short Sharp Shocked which came out in 1988. It’s (deliberately) all over the place in genre but wonderful.

The “hidden” track is also present on the vinyl – “Russian Roulette” is not listed on the labels but plays after “Must Be Luff.”

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is a Specialty Records pressing on Mercury labels.

  11. Tom Waits, The Heart of Saturday Night, 1974 on Asylum

Second studio album from Tom Waits, following Closing Time, and the first produced by Bones Howe. An absolute must have.

Much of Waits’ catalog is now being reissued but I love a chance to find early pressings of these in good shape. It’s amazing to me how timeless he is – this could come out today and still feel fresh, or could be from the 60s.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is a 1976 Specialty Records Pressing with the original inner liner.

  12. Public Enemy, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, 1987 on Def Jam

Debut studio album from Public Enemy, recorded at Spectrum City Studios and produced by Bill Stephney (of The Bomb Squad, with co-producers Carl Ryder and Hank Shocklee) with Rick Rubin credited as Executive Producer.

Still looking for a good vinyl copy of It Takes a Nation of Millions. Def Jam was distributed by CBS/Columbia (thus the Columbia on the labels).

My copy, via the Worcester Record Riot, is a 1987 Carrollton GA pressing with the BFC catalog number on the spine.

  13. I'm moving to #Worcester, Massachusetts in a week and a half. As far as I know, I don't know anyone who lives there (though I have several friends in the Greater Boston region). If you know anyone cool living in #CentralMA, or if you yourself are a cool person living there, let me know!

  14. Worcester election results:
Joe Petty, Mayor: good guy, but not up to our current challenges.
Jose Rivera beats Etel Haxhiaj: Jose says he'll fight for us. Etel did fight for us. He's got big shoes to fill.
Kathleen Roy beats Nellie Medina for School Committee: the incumbent won.
Dr Satya Mitra: threw massive amounts of money at his campaign and won.
