  1. Discover Your Own Slice of Paradise at a Hidden Beach

    Hideaway Beach

While wandering through the varied and lush tropical foliage, the air thick with the scent of blooming flowers and the sound of rustling fronds, I marveled at the vibrant greens surrounding me.  The sun filtered through the canopy, casting dappled light on the path ahead.

As I ventured further, I stumbled upon a hidden trail – less trodden, yet inviting. Curiosity propelled me forward, and soon, the dense flora opened up to reveal a breathtaking sight: a secret resort beach.

Soft white sands glistened brightly under the sun like diamond dust. Crystal-clear turquoise waters lapped gently at the shore, creating a melody that harmonized with the echoing calls of tropical birds. Palm trees swayed lazily in the breeze, offering shade and a sense of serenity, making it a sanctuary from a busy world.

It wasn’t just a destination; it was a total sensory reset.  In that moment, tucked away from the rest of life’s stresses, I hadn’t just found a beach – I’d found a version of paradise that felt like it belonged to those courageous enough to seek it out.

Many times the best travel experiences aren’t the ones we plan months in advance. They are the ones that require us to be a little bit lost, a little bit sweaty, and a whole lot of curious.

Pro Tip: Always take the less traveled path. Usually, it leads to the best memories and maybe even the best views.

  2. Snow on the gypsum dunes of White Sands.

The patches of snow help us see the true color of the dunes.

  3. This view of White Sands, the Tularosa basin, and distant mountain ranges probably looks a little off to you.

That's because it was taken in near-infrared, which removes most of the haziness we see in photos of distant objects. The haziness is a visual depth/distance cue that we rely on when looking at distant terrain.

The gypsum dunes of White Sands are 25 miles away, the first mountain range is 50 miles, and the most distant ridge line is 120 miles away...which does not make sense when looking at this photo.

  4. A long look across the Tularosa Basin shortly after sunrise. The sun is at my back, so haze is not much of a problem.

The dunes of White Sands, 25 miles away, cast shadows on the basin floor. The San Andres mountains mark the far end of the basin. Beyond them are the Caballo mountains near Truth or Consequences, and finally the Black Range in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness.

Compare this view to yesterday afternoon when the sun was almost shining into the camera and making for a very hazy view:

The second photo is a close crop of a different mountain. The white blob on the ridge saddle is Magdalena Ridge Observatory, 120 miles away:

  5. An unusual view of White Sands, the Tularosa Basin, and the San Andres mountains and the Black Range.

On a clear day you can see forever, but if you're looking toward the late afternoon sun across many miles...it's a very hazy view even on the best of days.

This image appears very compressed because I used a very long telephoto lens. The bottom of the frame features the gypsum dunes of White Sands...one mile below me and 25 miles away.

The flat Tularosa Basin stretches for many more miles and is bordered by the San Andres mountains 50 miles away. Very little terrain relief is visible on the mountains because of the strong haze.

The most distant ridges, even more obscured by haze, belong to the Black Range 120 miles away.

  6. The Most Beautiful Of Days in White Sands National Park

It's that time of year/season/computer getting full when I go through an clean out folders. You might see more of this past year's trips for the next couple of weeks.

  7. Yesterday evening's twilight over the Tularosa basin in southern New Mexico.

Is that monsoon fog moving in from the left?

No, it's White Sands illuminated by moonlight. (The waxing gibbous moon is out of the frame far to the left.) White Sands stands out compared to the darkness of the rest of the basin floor.

Mars is the brightest 'star' at the left edge of the frame, and the constellation Leo is dropping below the western horizon. (Regulus has already set.)

The lights of La Luz village are visible on the basin floor.

  8. Driving up highway 82 from the Tularosa Basin to Cloudcroft in the Sacramento mountains of southern New Mexico.

Monsoon storms are growing fast and big, but only over the highest terrain.

The Mexican Canyon Trestle is just below Cloudcroft

Looking back toward the Tularosa Basin floor you can see White Sands in the distance.

  9. Water tanker aircraft, fighting forest fires in southern New Mexico...have clearance to cross White Sands Missile Range.

The aircraft icon circled in red has just existed the restricted area of the range, and the icon circled in green is just entering the restricted area.

  11. Hmm, the US Army's 1st Armored Division has their own rock band, LOL.

"ALAMOGORDO, NM – White Sands National Park will hold its first Full Moon Night event of the year on Wednesday June 11, 2025, at 8:15 pm.

In partnership with Western National Parks, we are pleased to welcome the 1st Armored Division Rock Band for a performance at the park's June Full Moon Night event. The 1st AD Rock Band is stationed out of Fort Bliss and serve the Army as ambassadors for on- and off-post events."

  12. Another dynamic weather day in New Mexico. (19 May)

This visible light weather satellite loop shows a dust storm in the extreme southern portion of the state getting kicked up by winds from the west. (Normally the wind is from the southwest and blows the dust farther north into more of the state.) West Texas, El Paso, and northern Chihuahua, Mexico were also impacted.

Near the end of the animation loop, just before sunset, you can see a cold front from northern New Mexico pushing south hard, kicking up a gust front as it passes over White Sands in the Tularosa Basin.

The second graphic is a METAR history for Alamogordo airport. 20+ knot winds, with gusts to almost 30 knots, shifted by 80 degrees. This cold front has lots of momentum.

Tonight, parts of New Mexico, high plains and mountains, are under a freeze warning.

  13. Forest fires in Arizona leave smoke plumes in this weather satellite loop for 15 May.

Near the end of the loop, shortly before sunset, you can also see dust from White Sands streaming to the northeast...but it's far less than recent dust storms.

  14. In Between The Dunes

Because of the relatively high water table in White Sands National Park, there are many areas of a hardened sand between the taller dunes.

This is where the grasses grow and where you can see a different set of patterns.
