‘Like a bolt out of the blue’ #VJDay 80 years Ago
Early on the morning of 15 August 1945, Stromness folks were awakened from their sleep by the streets full of noise and people rejoicing. It was to be the start of two days celebrating VJ - Victory over Japan. On 8 May 1945 Germany had surrendered and although people felt relieved that the war in Europe was over, many men and women were still serving overseas.

Any politicians using VJ day to say how important it is that we never forget the sacrifices that the wartime generation made, while simultaneously allowing an actual genocide to proceed can get in the fucking sea.

Today is the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, (Victory over Japan Day), commemorating the end of World War II.
A national two-minute silence will be held at 12 noon.
The @LibraryofBham will be lit in purple, red & white to mark this important day.

#WWII For hours, civilians and military personnel had gathered in Lafayette Park across the street from the White House, sitting on the lawn, chatting quietly with one another. The growing crowd waited, waited, watching one another, watching the traffic, watching the street cars, watching the White House front door. At 7 pm ET on that Aug 14, 1945 President Truman stood before reporters in the Oval Office and announced Japan’s unconditional surrender.
