  1. We've starting putting the pieces together for Sprouts 2027, which will happen sometime in April on Zoom. (Usually on a Saturday.) This year we'll be playing Fjords. (Only the second phase.) Here's what we've got up so far:

    * Sprouts 2027 homepage: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts
    * Play Fjords online here: kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/fj
    * Interested in writing a computer player? Learn what you need to do to write one and submit it here: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

Sprouts is an abstract games conference where undergrads contribute talks. Even though there is a focus on undergrads, everyone is invited to attend!

  2. 🧪 Whether you're prepping for fall classes or finishing a summer research project, paywalls shouldn't be the reason you give up on a source.

Open Access Helper finds the legal free version — if one exists.

  3. One of my students coded up some Toads and Frogs games last year and this semester wanted to improve the Elephants and Rhinos positions so they were all generated with mean value of zero.

The issue is that if you generate really random E&R boards, they are often either extremely unbalanced or there are very few moves available.

They got it working! Now you can play Elephants and Rhinos games where it's complicated to find and make the best moves. Try it out here:

(I don't want to say it's "hard" because you can still find them in polynomial time.)

  4. #Sprouts2026 was yesterday and it was great! Sprouts is our annual conference in abstract games (often #CombinatorialGames) where students present #UndergradResearch for the contributed talks.

Here are my summaries of the talks: combinatorialgametheory.blogsp

Here are a bunch of my after-the-fact thoughts: combinatorialgametheory.blogsp

I need to make sure I figure a bunch of those things out in time for next year!

Thank you to everyone who attended and especially to all of our great speakers. Craig and I agreed that we're very lucky to get such amazing talks!

  5. The #Sprouts2026 program is coming along! We have nine contributed talks all lined up (from undergrads) and our keynote info should be going up later this week. kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

  6. We got our first talk scheduled for #Sprouts2026! kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts I'm looking forward to receiving more proposals.

I've also been getting questions about writing #AIPlayers and updated the directions on that page. kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts (Some of the notes were about last year's game, whoops!)

This paper stems from an observation by technician Vincent Pan (now at MSU as a PhD student), during another study that heat reduced the attachment strength of mucilage and encouraged the lab to figure it out... more in the thread - #plantecology #seedmucilage #ecology #undergradresearch #seedecology besjournals.onlinelibrary.wile

  13. TFW a student sends you absolutely GORGEOUS data after they've spent months and months dealing with the frustration of trying to nail down the protocol

  14. #introduction time, I suppose

I'm a bacterial geneticist at a smallish public college. I teach (frequently Genetics) and have an undergrad only research lab. Research interests include CNVs and 16S ribosomal RNA processing

I post a little about science and faculty life, a lot about being an academic/working mom and about my kids' zany antics, with some photos of my very handsome dog Sammy in the mix
