Two DOGE twenty-something’s with no experience or expertise walked into the National Endowment for the Humanities in March 2025.
Neither had ever administered a grant. Neither had read a humanities proposal. Neither knew what the Administrative Procedures Act was. They were just two guys from Elon Musk’s world armed with ChatGPT and six weeks to gut a federal agency. By April 1st, $100 million in grants was gone. Sixty-five percent of the staff was fired.

when searching for federal humanities grants to cancel last year,
according to a class-action lawsuit.
The methodology contributed to the cancellation of National Endowment for the Humanities ( #NEH ) grants to study:
violence against women during the Holocaust,
postwar Soviet Jewish literature,
and hundreds of other topics,
even as the NEH would soon bestow $10.4 million, its largest-ever grant,
to the Tikvah Fund, a politically conservative Jewish cultural project.

this clarifies what happened to the grant I was involved with as a team member in that maybe hadn't reached active status and wasn't being defunded by this effort, although another Klezmer Institute project was, deemed as being DEI because it aimed to make music manuscripts accessible (🙄)

I've complained before that an #NEH funded klezmer publishing project I was a minor part of was killed along with all the other stuff when Trump was reelected. I knew some of this stuff but hearing about the quotes from the dolts involved during a deposition is boiling my blood all over again. I don't care about my specific grant as much as just the complete defunding of an entire spectrum of research. 😔

I've accused #DOGE of terminating #NEH grants (and other grants) by using dumb keyword searches to look for prohibited words. It turns out that DOGE used dumb #ChatGPT prompts instead. Like this one (quoting verbatim): “Does the following relate at all to D.E.I.? Respond factually in less than 120 characters. Begin with ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’”

Update. Bad news from the #NEH for #KnowledgeCommons (and the rest of us).
https://about.hcommons.org/2025/04/17/on-the-neh-and-our-path-forward/"On April 2, 2025, we received notification that our NEH Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant, awarded in 2020, was terminated effective immediately…On April 10, 2025, we received further…notification that our contract to provide the NEH’s Designated Public-Access #Repository was also being terminated…This loss is devastating…both for the financial impact it represents…but also for the unceremonious end to a goal we’d set for ourselves years ago…Not to mention the bigger picture here: that designated public-access repository is no longer needed, because it is assumed that the NEH will no longer be funding research, and thus there will be no results of research to make publicly accessible."
PS: All the agencies covered by the #OSTP #NelsonMemo must designate #OpenAccess repositories for their OA content. NEH was the only agency to designate a repo not hosted by the govt. All the other agency repos will be hosted by the govt, where they will be subject to political censorship or takedowns.
