  1. Phytobiome (Biomes 🌍)

A phytobiome consists of a plant situated in its specific ecological area, including its environment and the associated communities of organisms which inhabit it. These organisms include all macro- and micro-organisms living in, on, or around the plant including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, insects, animals, and other plants. The environment includes the soil,...

  3. Shade tree (Landscape ecology 🏞️)

A shade tree is a large tree whose primary role is to provide shade in the surrounding environment due to its spreading canopy and crown, where it may give shelter from sunlight in the heat of the summer for people who seek recreational needs in urban parks and house yards, and thus, also protecting them from the sun's harmful UV rays. Some of the ...

  6. I fell that at #BlueSky there is more engagement between scientists and other people.

And is not that I don't follow tags about #Biology, #Biogeography, #Systematics, #PlantEcology, #Biogeography or #Taxonomy. I do, but the volume of Linux and programming things overwhelms them.

But is not like I don't like Mastodon. I love it. But is funny that (for me) there is this clearly defined boundary: #Mastodon for computer things, #BlueSky for science things.

  7. The patience, meticulousness and dedicated time of our technicians are essential in our research! Here is one of them, Martín, in Jaime's experiment with Anthyllis cytisoides at CIEF (GV) facilities, Valencia (Spain)

"‘Disease-like’ goatheads have riddled Boise for years. How the city plans to eradicate them"

This is part of my PhD dissertation and I was super excited to be interviewed for this article. It's a nasty invasive species that does a lot of harm to folks bike tires. Let's do our part and eradicate it.

  13. The firsts researchers that had an #evolutionary view of #fire ecology were probably EB Poulton (when looking at fire beetles 1915) & WL Jepson (studying #Arctostaphylos 1922)

    1) Do you know of any other earlier?
    2) Do you know of any woman with such view earlier than 1970? #gender

  15. California native plant nerds, if you had to answer the question or else your yard would get turnt into a non-native lawn, do you think of Acmispon glaber as a shrub or a perennial herb? You only get those two options and none of this factual, well, it depends. Bee on a deerweed. #cnps #californianativeplantsociety #californianativeplants #nativeplants #plantecology

What do you mean by inherent, innate, imposed, physical, physiological, morphological, primary, or secondary, ... dormancy?
    How is dormancy released?
    Is dormancy a bet-hedging strategy?

Hi! 👋 We are scientists studying Earth and environmental systems, as a research institute at #CUBoulder. Our name = cold/high places, and we’ve got deep roots there. But these days we investigate systems from the tropics to the poles, incl. world ocean & atmosphere.

  23. Well i guess this is really happening… looking forward to reconnecting with community of #PlantEcology, #PlantEvolution, and #Conservation folks on this new platform. Already seeing some familiar faces!
I am a plant ecologist based at #SmithCollege focused on questions around plant conservation and #ClimateChange, with some developing projects exploring #CarnivorousPlants as well as #mycorrhizae. My lab involves mostly undergraduates #PUI and often collaborates w/ #SmithCollegeBotanicGarden.

  24. We are in autumn but this is not a deciduous #forest, but a forest that burned with low intensity (leaves not consumed): the Bejis #fire (August, eastern Spain)

We confirm that this fire affected some populations of #Taxus baccata (#yew), a species quite sensitive to fires, & rare & in regression in most #Spain. Because of the low intensity, some may survive (but we'll see).
New climate, new fire regimes ...

  26. #Fire selects sexual #precocity in pines! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

Populations of #Pinus halepensis (a #serotinous #pines), subjected to higher frequency of crown fires (short fire interval) produce cones at younger ages than those pops that rarely #burnt

Being precocious in fireprone environments is adaptive because it increases the probability of having a significant seed bank for regeneration when the next fire arrives

  28. I'm defending my masters thesis tomorrow, effect of invasive species on the Woolsey Fire, monitoring monthly non-native and native vegetation succession.
I was a dog groomer for years before finishing my associates at community college as a 26 year old. I then went on to do my bach and masters at Cal State Northridge, working alongside some of the best ecologists I could have asked for.
I'm beyond excited and nervous to be sharing my passion tomorrow. Prost. #plantecology #wildfire #queerstem
