  1. #Sprouts2025 was today! We had eleven student talks, the most ever! Five of those were early-morning talks for presenters in distant time zones, the most ever! We had six computer players, the most ever! We had sixteen people participate in our human tournament, the most ever!

I'm very excited that this year was such a success.

The website (kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts) has been updated with the winners of the tournaments. Congratulations to Hiyu Inoue for winning the human tournament. Congratulations to Ian Grenville for his player, HotShot, which won the computer tournament. A sincere Thank You to Hiyu for defeating HotShot in the John Henry match, a big win for Team Humans.

You can try playing against all six of the computer players on the #TopplingDominoes site: kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/to

Thank you to everyone who presented and attended! See you all at Sprouts 2026!

  2. I think the schedule for #Sprouts2025 is set! kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts We got a ton of talk proposals in the last week and we filled up (and went over by a little). We have:
    * Five early morning talks for speakers from Asia.
    * Keynote by Matt Ferland
    * Afternoon talks for speakers not-as-far-away.
    * Human and Computer #TopplingDominoes tournaments.

We have two submitted computer players, and I know of three other people who may submit one. If just one of them does, we'll have our biggest number of submissions ever! (If you submit late, please let me know so I know to look for it.)

    Looking forward to Saturday!

  3. Sprouts 2025 will be on April 12, 2025. Sprouts is a #CombinatorialGames conference with a focus on undergraduates.
We traditionally have a focus on math and computer science, but are very willing to broaden our scope. The homepage with the Call for Talks is: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

We will have talks for and by undergraduates and human and AI tournaments. Our game this year is: Toppling Dominoes, which you can play here: kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/to

The AI tournament is held in JavaScript. Instructions for submitting a player are here: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts. I have had recent success with students training their players in Python, then using #TensorFlowJS to port it over to JS.

Registration is free! Please see the homepage for instructions to register.

  4. The application for our Summer 2025 HCI undergraduate research program is now open until January 17, 2025.

Students can choose from 25 research projects when applying to this paid, 10-week HCI REU program.

  5. #Sprouts2024 has more talks lined up than we've ever had before (11)!
    Undergrads: 7 (high is 8, in 2017)
    High schoolers: 2 (new high)
    Keynote: 1
    Me: 1.

    Talks listed here: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

I should probably record my talk (CGT Crash Course) and move it online in future years to make more room for contributed talks!

Unfortunately, we still have zero submissions for our Computer Gorgons Tournament. Make a player: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

  6. In less than a week, we've accepted five more talks for Sprouts, which is happening online on April 20. That puts us up to seven #UndergraduateResearch talks, including two from India! Although we specifically look for undergraduates to present, you don't have to be an undergrad to attend. The conference is very casual and includes both a human and computer tournament. If you're interested in attending, please see the homepage, kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts, for more information. #Sprouts2024 #CombinatorialGames

  7. We have a date for #Sprouts2024! Saturday, April 20. Registration is free. kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts As with recent years, the conference will be held online.

If you have an undergrad who wants to present a short talk on games, please check out our Call for Talks: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts Topics are not strictly limited to #CombinatorialGames and can include other games and puzzles. We are not limited to a Math and CS focus and would love to see some humanities talks. #UndergraduateResearch

We will have #GorgonsGame tournaments (kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/go) for both human and AI players (kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts).

  14. The #Sprouts2024 webpage is up: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts Our keynote speaker will be Michael Fisher from West Chester University of PA.

You can play around with writing a Gorgons player for our computer player tournament: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

We haven't yet picked a Saturday in April for the conference, but we're working on it. If you know any undergrads who will be working on anything related to combinatorial or mathematical games, please have them consider giving a talk! If you have a student who might be looking for an AI project, suggest to them to take part in the Gorgons player competition!

    #SproutsConference #AI #UndergraduateResearch #CombinatorialGames

  15. We have a game for next year's Sprouts! Gorgons, which is quite similar to Amazons. Each turn you choose one of your (non-stone) Gorgons to move, pick a direction a Chess Queen can move and then move it in that direction (or keep it still). Before your Gorgon moves, it uses its gaze to turn a space to stone. If there is another Gorgon in the direction it's chosen, it turns that one to stone. Otherwise it turns the last clear space in that direction to a stone block. (You can't choose a direction where there isn't any free space.) It's a normal play game, so you lose when you can't make a move.

Gorgons is playable here: kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/go The basic AI is terrible (they needlessly turn their own pieces to stone a lot). I've been enjoying playing as just one gorgon against a team of many.

We don't have a date yet for #Sprouts2024 (it'll probably be a Saturday in April). There will be a human tournament and an AI tournament. I'll work on getting the webpages up with instructions to submit your own AI player.

  18. 'Thank You' cards are my favorite thing ever. They sustain me. I'm so glad to have helped someone on their path. This card filled me up with warm fuzzies after a long day. 🥺💖 I've come to collect 'Thank You's-- one day I aspire to have a whole wall of them in my future office!

I'm so proud of this person!!!!

  22. Update on #Sprouts2023, the #CombinatorialGames conference for #undergraduateresearch: We have 15 registered attendees and 4 scheduled speakers, with 1 or 2 more people who we expect to submit abstracts. kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

We still don't have any submissions for the AI Flag Coloring tournaments. We are extending the due date by an extra day: Thursday of next week. That will give us enough time to set up the tournament page. Also, by popular request, I have provided the FlagColoring javascript source code. It is at the bottom of the tournament page: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts At this point, any player has a good chance to win! Submit something!

(At what point of not having any submissions am I allowed to write my own player for the tournament? Maybe by Monday?)

  25. Undergraduate Kylie Snyder will be repping my #AGU22 poster on #plasticbeaches. She was part of a team of undergraduates who have done great work on plastic dynamics on a single urban beach. There's a lot more plastic & its more spatially variable than previous studies in #LakeErie have documented. #plasticpollution #beach #plastics #UndergraduateResearch

  26. I'm sad to be missing out on in person science and networking, but I'll be online #AGU22. Two of my Kent State #UndergraduateResearch students will be sharing their work in the poster session. Check out their e-posters online or in person. #plasticpollution #trashystreams #plasticbeaches
