  1. I don’t know if anybody who follows me here is interested in old and obscure abstract games, but this blog I stumbled on today is an absolute treasure trove. sagme.blogspot.com/ #AbstractGames #BoardGames

  2. Sprouts 2025 will be on April 12, 2025. Sprouts is a #CombinatorialGames conference with a focus on undergraduates.
We traditionally have a focus on math and computer science, but are very willing to broaden our scope. The homepage with the Call for Talks is: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts

We will have talks for and by undergraduates and human and AI tournaments. Our game this year is: Toppling Dominoes, which you can play here: kyleburke.info/DB/combGames/to

The AI tournament is held in JavaScript. Instructions for submitting a player are here: kyleburke.info/sprouts/sprouts. I have had recent success with students training their players in Python, then using #TensorFlowJS to port it over to JS.

Registration is free! Please see the homepage for instructions to register.

  3. An enduring interest of mine is “game systems” — that is, game components which can be used to play multiple games. A deck of cards is the canonical example, though there are others. One game system which I haven’t seen but believe would be fairly flexible: a collection of small colored bowls and colored stones. Beyond the obvious mancala games (of which there are many), circular bowls can be arranged into square or hex grids to play a variety of abstracts. #boardgames #mancala #abstractgames

  4. At the beginning of the year i had an itch about making an abstract game in which captured pieces must be placed back on the board. Well that itch lead to CLAUSTRO, feel free to try it out at home (you only need a 5x5 grid and 2 sets of 4 pawns).
I hope you'll find it engaging and compelling as I wanted it to be.

  5. Not sure what the crossover is like between urbanists and abstract game players, but Streetcar Suburb, a solid game with a light urbanism theme, has been added for online play at play.abstractplay.com/. I’m really enjoying exploring this one.

  6. Time for another puzzle! This time, from a game of 13x13 .

White to find a winning line.

  7. Here's another entry in my series of puzzles/problems, this time from one of my 9x9 games 🙃

White to play and find the only winning line.

(I did not find it in the actual game)

  8. @[email protected] Beautiful! This is actually an even more aesthetically pleasing line than the one I ended up playing, since yours makes use of the ring threats so nicely :)

I played B5 instead of B2, forcing white to connect at B2, and then started a ladder with C6 (continuation: littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.)

But I like your line better!

  9. Let's see if there's any interest in a series of puzzles/problems from !

For the first one, a neat little position (if you need an introduction or refresher to Havannah's rules: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havannah)

Black to play and force a win 😀
