This paper argues that Tiutchev’s 1851 translation of Schiller’s Das Siegesfest (Pominki) was actually written in 1848–49, triggered by Zhukovskii’s Odyssey translation and the European revolutions. Tiutchev used the ancient theme to compete with Zhukovsky poetically and to push back against revolutionary chaos—making the translation a political as well as literary act.

Had an interesting "onboarding interview" for a #translation project today. Not sure yet if we're a good fit, but the discussion crystallized my thoughts on a little functional disconnect in what many companies do to evaluate language service providers.

The subject of "test translations" has been argued over for all of the 20+ years I have been involved in commercial translation work, and I have no intention to add to that debate today. However....

Project managers, "vendor managers", etc. if you are trying to evaluate someone's suitability to work with your company on some project, perhaps instead of simply sending out some text in whatever format as a test translation, you should structure the test in a way that actually reflects your processes.

For example, if your company uses #Trados Studio and you expect prospective team members to translate packages from that tool, then for God's sake, don't just send out the text for the "test" as a PDF, DOCX or whatever. Send a damned package. And if you don't get an SDLRPX back for the SDLPPX you sent, well, you know that there may be other issues ahead. And doing things this way can also save you time and allow you to apply some automated QA as well.

Ditto for any other tool, be it #Phrase, #Wordfast, #memoQ or whatever floats your boat. Do the "test" as a small assignment on your server, send out a package for your favored tool, etc. Too many times I have seen friends and corporate clients get burned by vetting processes that are really not fit for purpose. Don't join that club.

I'll be repeating my online workshop series on the #memoQ Regex Assistant on March 9, 16 and 23 from 3:00-4:30pm (Lisbon time).

#Regex is a powerful tool for solving problems of text structure in #translation, review and QA (among other things), but its arcane syntax is off-putting to most people, and real mastery takes a long time. But the Regex Assistant eliminates this problem by allowing stored libraries of useful regular expressions to be accessed via plain language names and labels, with detailed descriptions to aid in their use. If you can read, you can use this regex in memoQ (or elsewhere).

This "rebooted" instance of the workshops reorganizes the prior presentation and examples based on questions and help requests from prior participants. As before, attendance is free, but registration is required.

This series has focused on how ordinary, intelligent #translators and reviewers can use the power of #RegularExpressions to solve problems in #translation and #localization without getting bogged down in ugly, non-intuitive syntax.

Attendees are given a useful library of expressions to aid their work, which are organized with understandable names, labels and descriptions - all you need to find and apply them. Most of these expressions should be usable in other tools like #Trados Studio or #Xbench.

It’s a testing ground of sorts for a talk I’ll be giving for the BP Winter Translation Forum next month and some courses that will probably take place in Lisbon early next year. The content will be dripped out in the weeks ahead, and I may branch it or extend it at any time.

The primary tool discussed will be #memoQ TMS, which uses regex in colorful ways in many features or modules. Much of the material discussed, however, can be applied to other translation support environments and tools. Contributions and questions in comments are always welcome.

I believe that the usual approach to teaching the use of regex for translation and localization projects is sadly mistaken. Unlike most presenters of this subject matter, it is NOT my intention to teach anyone nerdy syntax, though I will show examples containing such. Regex can be a difficult subject even for seasoned programmers, and it is simply idiotic to expect the intelligent masses in the translation sector to master it in any useful way in reasonable time.

My main objectives will be to help people develop an awareness of problems to which regex might be usefully applied, and to offer guidance on how to plan or request solutions and provide suitable data for testing these solutions. As part of this, I will be sharing some favorite resources which you can use to identify specific solutions and go into as much depth as you like.
