We were delighted to host a campus visit for students from 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞!

During the visit, Form 4–6 students explored the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Translation through engaging interactions with our instructors, including Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei, Dr. Yinran Wu, and Dr. Li Li, in the order of their presentations. The sessions encouraged active participation, with students asking thoughtful questions and sharing their perspectives.

Two mini-lectures on Computer-Aided Translation and Interpreting were delivered, offering students valuable insights into human-technology collaboration, as well as how translation and interpreting skills are transferrable to a wide range of career paths.

We hope the visit inspired the students to see how Translation and Interpreting can continue to thrive in the age of AI. We look forward to welcoming them again in the near future!

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭. 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫é 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐙𝐡𝐞𝐣𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲

On the morning of May 8, Professor James St. André, Chair of the Department of Translation at CUHK, was invited to deliver a lecture at Zhejiang University titled “Exploring 19th-Century Chinese-English Translation History with Digital Humanities Tools: Promises and Prospects.”

Focusing on his research on nineteenth-century Chinese-English translators, Professor St. André demonstrated how social network analysis and digital humanities methods can open new pathways in translation history. By integrating 63 types of data—including biographical details, publication records, places of work, and institutional affiliations—he has developed a database of 262 translators, drawing on global library catalogues, nineteenth-century English-language periodicals, missionary biographies, and East India Company archives. The project combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to map networks, relationships, and historical trajectories within this translation community.

The lecture was followed by a lively and engaging discussion with faculty and students. We are delighted to see the impact of CUHK Translation’s research beyond Hong Kong and are grateful to our colleagues at Zhejiang University for their warm hospitality.

I also had a taste of "expect the unexpected" which I had heard of in lessons. We're trained to use professional equipment in SI booths, but we may not even have a booth in real life. It's also common that the speakers don't follow their scripts, but it's most important to remain professional and do our best under any circumstances, even when the speaker starts singing in Hakka.

All in all, the SI student intern experience is not only a way of putting classroom knowledge into practice, but also a very unique part of my university life as a translation major student.

We’re thrilled to celebrate the publication of two new books by Professor Lawrence Wang-chi Wong, recently released by Shanghai Oriental Press.
The first is a revised edition of his well-known study of the principle of “xin, da, ya” (faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance). First published in 1999, the book has long been regarded as a foundational text in Chinese translation studies. This new edition revisits the original work, with updates and revisions that reflect Professor Wong’s continued engagement with the subject over the years.
The second book grows out of his more recent research on translation and diplomacy in the Qing dynasty. Focusing on Sino-British relations, it explores how translation worked in practice—in negotiations, official correspondence, and diplomatic exchanges—and what that meant for relations between China and Britain at the time.

Picture writing and hieroglyphs are often seen as writing technologies that belong firmly to the past. But what does it mean to write in pictures, and how can a tradition of "picture writing" survive into the present day?

From the 1920s to the mid-20th century, the botanist/anthropologist Joseph Rock was the first to seriously study the Naxi pictographs of southwest China, a tradition he thought would disappear if he did not record it. In 1952 he made a dire prediction: "“A very few years more and the Na-khi books will be undecipherable…they will remain closed books, no Rosetta stone would prove of value.”

Dr. Chester Cheng & Dr. Barbara Jiawei Li (Co-PIs) — LoopLearn: An Adaptive AI Framework for Guided Experiential Learning Beyond the Classroom
This project will introduce “LoopLearn,” an AI-powered platform designed to support out-of-class learning. The project team includes six teachers from Translation, Cultural and Religious Studies, Chinese Language and Literature, and Linguistics. Dr. Lily Li Li from the Department of Translation also serves as Co-Supervisor.
Dr. Lily Li Li and Dr. Barbara Jiawei Li (Co-PIs) — “Learning by Creating: A Bilingual Corpus Built with Students for Virtual Learning”
This collaborative project, conducted in partnership with the Translation and Interpreting Programme at CUHK (Shenzhen), aims to develop a bilingual literary translation corpus. It will support translation students’ learning through virtual, hands-on practice.

The Megajournal project, spearheaded by the Chinese University Library and Chinese University Press, is also supported by the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Translation at CUHK.

The Journal of Translation Studies is still a bilingual, double-blind peer-reviewed publication, edited jointly by Lawrence Wong and Prof. James St. André, with an international editorial board. We publish two numbers per year, one in June, one in December, and accept papers on all aspects of translation studies.

We are also happy to arrange special issues. Contact us if you have a topic that you would like to guest edit with us.

The new online platform has all articles in the new series, as well as volumes 9–14 of the first series; in other words, everything since 2006. The earlier volumes will be added gradually over the course of 2026.

If you have published an article with us, you may now distribute the final published version of your article freely anywhere you like.

If you have not yet published with us, now is a great time to submit your article for publication in an established, open-access journal at no cost.

The Centre for Studies of Daoist Culture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has long been dedicated to promoting scholarly exchange and advancing research in Daoist studies. As part of this mission, we organize the "Workshop on Daoist Studies," which has become a prestigious platform for academic dialogue and intellectual engagement.

Helen: “In SI lessons, we stay indoors, have a set of gears, and sit in a booth. But this was something else; it was outdoors, just a portable microphone, and a lot of walking around. The panel discussion was set in front of the village, capturing the nature of rural life. Wind was blowing, birds were chirping, joining the discussion on stage. We walked around with the mic, to wherever we heard the speaker best. It was fun, more importantly, I have learnt to prepare well to not be well-prepared.”

Harry: “The 2-hour event was rather casual. No booths, no earphones and no Wi-Fi connections. We even had to move around to hear the speakers better. The most memorable part was that one of the speakers said that he wanted to test us interpreters by saying Cantonese expressions. Venuti said that translators are invisible, but it seems that it’s not the case for interpreters because the audience was all looking at us after that.”

Hilary: “It was a valuable learning experience that helped me gain a deeper insight into the role of an interpreter out in the field. We had to interpret for the guests under the sun and move around the venue to better listen to the speakers. Even when the tent got blown away by the strong wind, we had to improvise and remain professional. It was certainly unforgettable and eye-opening for my first interpretation job.”

Raymond: “I encountered challenges that I would never have faced otherwise. For example, we had to keep moving around to find the optimal location where we wouldn’t evaporate under the sun and where the voices of the speakers and ours wouldn’t overlap. The content itself was also challenging, as it was loaded with unexpected idioms and poems in local dialects, in addition to fast rhythms and constant switching between Cantonese and Mandarin.”

Our students were deeply inspired by the intricate connections between visual art and linguistic expression. The exhibitions provided invaluable context for understanding how cultural nuances are conveyed across different media—a lesson that resonates strongly with the art of translation. The experience reinforced the importance of cultural literacy in our field and sparked meaningful discussions about the role of translators and interpreters as cultural mediators.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hong Kong Museum of Art for their generous support and for waiving the entry fee to the Min Chiu Society exhibition. On the afternoon of Friday, October 31st, 35 Master of Arts students from CUHK’s Department of Translation had the privilege of exploring two remarkable exhibitions at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Our students from the Arts Translation, Simultaneous Interpreting, and Consecutive Interpreting courses experienced firsthand how art transcends language and culture.

The visit featured two captivating exhibitions: Engaging Past Wisdom: Min Chiu Society at Sixty-five, which offered profound insights into Chinese cultural heritage, and Shopping in Canton: China Trade Art in the 18th and 19th Centuries (Phase V), where we were expertly guided by Ms. Carina Khan. Her docent tour brought the historical narratives of cross-cultural exchange to life, perfectly complementing our students’ studies in translation and interpretation.

The Department of Translation welcomes local applicants, mainland Gaokao candidates, and international students. This year, several students joined via international admissions. We invited them to share their backgrounds and experiences. Here is a reflection from Sofia:

I am Sofia from Macao, a freshman majoring in Translation. Before embarking on this new journey at CUHK, I had studied in an English-medium school for 12 years. Many might have asked – Why are you still choosing translation as your major in this era of AI? It’s my family background and personal interests that sparked my passion for translation. Growing up in a bilingual environment, I’ve always been fascinated by how languages connect people. On top of that, I love watching films from all over the world, where subtitles and good translation are essential for understanding and enjoyment.
