I was able to repair all my #ThinkPads myself and it was an absolute joy.
It's also quite easy to find replacement parts, whether for really old devices or newer ones, and you often have the choice between original and affordable replacement parts.
That's what I call valuable and sustainable.

My M4 MBA is having display issues, and I’m potentially in the market for a new laptop. For personal reasons, I’m leaning toward not getting another Mac.

I like #ThinkPads and would like to like #Framework, but I’m skeptical.

I am typing a lot! and I love the ThinkPad keyboard (a lot!), but unfortunately I don’t like their displays (I expect more resolution).

Can anyone tell me anything about the Framework’s keyboard?

Wisst ihr, warum ich Thinkpads mag? Weil man sie reparieren kann. Habe ein "defektes" X1 Carbon um 40 € gekauft, neues Mainboard direkt bei Lenovo für 45 €, ausgetauscht und das Gerät ist wie neu.

This week has been full of major improvements to my #Linux setup across my #ThinkPads. I now have:
1. Significantly faster boot times due to quicker #LUKS decryption by separating out #boot and #EFI into separate volumes.
2. Upgrade from #LUKS1 to #LUKS2 (while most of the rest of my setup)
3. Better visuals for LUKS passphrase prompts using (finally) #plymouth

I couldn't have asked for more improvements in barely two days.

@mephisto I was too scared to pick up an #ARM laptop for #Linux! I usually don't need more than ~8h of battery life, and modern laptops (even #thinkpads) don't always have the greatest Linux support anyway, no need to top it off with an ARM CPU.

Have you seen the new Intel's Lunar Lake chips? They are very well suited for notebooks too, despite using the x86 architecture.

@chmod777 for me is a must have a libre open source #bootloader. @system76, @starlabssystems, and @novacustom @purism. are companoes which offers #floss bootloaders for new #laptops. @all are there more ones? I am also want have a new one ;) There are also companies who put this on #Thinkpads. I don't know what u mean with light gaming. For studing, development and coding the horizon should be good.

I fear that a decade from now, even used #Thinkpads will be junk, but for now, they're still pretty nice, especially the 5-year-oldish models. :D

The latest generation #Trackpoint is so shallow that it's physically painful to use, making it pointless.

i have not found it painful, but badly done for sure.

Lenovo has also shown a new model without the feature, not sure how that will go down with business users.

Personally I am not in the market for a new Thinkpad, still plenty of good second hand options available.

@leah Ich kauf mehrheitlich im Secondhand Bereich und hier habe ich mit alten #thinkpads (X201 und X260) und #fairphones (#3) bislang gute Erfahrungen gemacht, was die "Langfristigkeit" und Reparaturfähigkeit betrifft.

Es sind aber zu Beginn (auch second hand) nicht die günstigsten Produkte, aber fair, für die Nutzungsdauer jedenfalls

Im Werkzeugbereich habe ich ähnliches mit Festool (hier einige Produkte), wobei hier der Anschaffungspreis auch secondhand sehr hoch ist.

Aber ich hatte schon oft Ersatzteilbestellungen und die sind dort einfach super.

EDIT: nachträglich die Marken auf bestimmte Produkte reduziert, wie ich leider überlesen habe und @leah aber klar hervorgehoben hat.

After watching Action Retro's recent video, I'm now on a mission to make myself a 486SX-compatible #Linux 'distro'. I started with FLOPPINUX, but affording myself some luxuries like networking, nano, ftp, ssh, etc. I'm *hoping* to make something that will allow me to work from my early #ThinkPads!

Why has lenovo decided to make fixing their newer model thinkpads so difficult. ugh. For example the T14 uses adhesives for the monitor and it's bezel? and the old bezel needs to be pulled so hard that it requires full replacement.
Much more difficult compared to the T480s that has a bezel that can be taken off without breaking it and 4 screws for the LCD panel.

Is there any legitimate engineering decision for placing a laptop's usb-c charge port underneath the hinge support? Not my field but placing inarguably the most critical /O connector right under the area subject to the most mechanical stress seems like not the greatest idea.

I grabbed this ThinkPad i Series 1171 today for $25.

I know nothing about the i series other than this one has a P3 and 122MB memory. It's in absolute perfect condition. Even if it end up being a terrible machine, I'm still gonna be happy just to sit it on a shelf and look at it. It's gorgeous. It also came with its HDD caddie and battery. The battery is long gone but it's at least there to fill the spot.
