Всем привет, меня зовут Роман и я энтузиаст. Не так чтобы конкретно в чем‑то, а так, вообще. По долгу службы я тесно связан с GNU/Linux отчего часто и подолгу смотрю в черный экран с буквами. И вот, в один из таких эпизодов я подумал: - А зачем мне мышь, если я постоянно пишу в консоль? Двигать окна? А зачем их двигать, если они все одинаковые?.. Очевидно, в этом порыве я не пионер. Мои эксперименты с оконными менеджерами привели меня к динамическому тайлингу и настал черед устройств ввода.

Before #Framework embraced big tent of nazis, I mused could it be my next laptop. Didn't brought because there wasn't a single keyboard with #trackpoint available and forum replys on this topic insisted several times that trackpoint users are being religious (sic) and needy bitches (my interpretation). For me personally? It is my single mode of "mousing" since 2006. Has saved me a lot of carpal tunel problem. And it is not an expensive tech per se. Dismissing it entirely is not less religious.

The trackpoint has never been the same after the ThinkPad *30 series. It's kind of been a disaster since then. Lenovo tried to get rid of buttons in the *40 series and then reluctantly re-added the buttons with the *50 series when people complained, but they never tried to replicate the feel of the earlier trackpoints. Also the soft rim trackpoint was best and they got rid of that completely. I just use an external mouse now.

@rysiek The #IBM #Thinkpad keyboards were god-level laptop keyboard. Wish they still made them like that.Their #trackpoint sticks where you didn't have to move your hand to use a mouse pointer, no accidental touching/click on a touchpad, and took up less space were great.

Not only my 2024 #Thinkpad has an harder time to keep its #trackpoint in place (and by that I mean that sometimes while typing my finger brushes against it hard enough that it slides out of its place - to the point that today it just jumped ut and fell into an hard to reach place), now I found out that it is a lot thinner than in older generation Thinkpads so the replacements I thought I had for it are useless... :-(

Which means its time to install a desktop on this nice old Latitude.
After fixing the Intel Wifi not working because somehow I always have the exact hardware with the bug and not any of the others that don't have a typo in the firmware package filename 👼

Kann man #lenovo nur gratulieren!
Wenn ich nicht schon so ein super feines recht neues #thinkpad hätte, wäre das meine Wahl. Besonders weil der frame.work voraussichtlich nie einen #trackpoint haben wird, ist das eine außerordentlich gute Nachricht für mich.

The latest generation #Trackpoint is so shallow that it's physically painful to use, making it pointless.
i have not found it painful, but badly done for sure.
Lenovo has also shown a new model without the feature, not sure how that will go down with business users.
Personally I am not in the market for a new Thinkpad, still plenty of good second hand options available.
