A sea-monster movie borrowing the aesthetic of whaling epics inevitably sails into the shadow of Moby-Dick. The spectacle is fun, but the ideas feel smaller than the ocean they’re trying to cross. Big ships, bigger beasts… but the biggest stories are the ones with ideas deep enough to match the water.

Nominations for the #Oscars 🏆 is up. And these are the noms for #Animation. The ceremony will be held March 12.
Really glad #TheSeaBeast at least got nominated. My pick would be #Pinnocchio, but I wouldnt be mad if #PussInBoots won too.

Probably my favorite Kaiju film of the last 10 years. I know I'm late to the party, but it's a great watch.

Received a beautiful, textured print from Netflix promoting The Sea Beast during this awards season. I loved the film, so this was a nice surprise. Now I need to make some room on the office wall for it!

@Scofisticated I saw #TheSeaBeast yesterday, and I completely agree. The cinematography, especially for the naval battles, was striking.

#TheSeaBeast was fantastic fun. And a great story. It captured sea-faring fun, characters with past & purpose & complexity. It does something cool with color of all sorts of saturation. And really shines in the tiny details.
And watching it, I constantly felt something. I saw the new Thor, & it was fine. But enjoyed seeing the grand details on a grand canvas. Meanwhile, all I could think here was "I should be watching ~this~ movie on the silver screen." This movie deserves that silver canvas.
