  6. Hi everyone. Hope all is well.
    Just in case you haven’t seen it yet, the AppleVis 2025 Accessibility Report Card is out, and it’s an important read.
    I had the chance to contribute feedback this year, and it really reflects what a lot of us in the blind and low vision community have been experiencing lately.
    With Apple’s 50th anniversary coming up, this is a big moment. Accessibility has come a long way, but there’s clearly work that needs to be done. Stability, reliability, and listening to users has to be the focus moving forward.
    Grateful to be part of this community and these conversations.
    Please share and spread this everywhere.

  11. Linux for Mere Mortals, my introductory blog post about Linux, is finally out! I did my best to address common questions and concerns, and focus on the things that less technical people care about in their day to day computer usage.

    I was originally hoping to get this out before the Windows 10 EOL, but it's pretty long, and writing my thesis is taking more time than expected. Feel free to reply with questions and recommendations!

  12. @cyberseckyle I see this overall as a bad trend, increasing autofill on the software end & increasing lights, including backlighting on keyboards as a mess for the hardware end.

    My neuropathy isn't that bad yet (& a few months a year I've still got full sensation) but it's bad enough that I need a clicky keyboard to help me to know when I've pressed a key, and backlit keyboards are painful to see.

    We overall used to have a greater diversity of designs, which helped disabled pick what was best, without paying extra for true customization and that's a larger problem I'm seeing, which includes #FOSS having open source hardware that mimics #BigTech in having under basic 3 designs with 20+ options that have the tiniest of differences between them. #TechAccessibility #Diversity #DisabilityAccessibility

  13. How I adblock:
    ## Advertisements and Screen Readers

    Lots of the time, ads are just a garbled unlabeled mess, and they can lead to unfortunate accessibility issues.
    For example, on iOS, some articles have silent ad embeds (like videos) that make VoiceOver count down endlessly. Because of things like that, I adblock everywhere.

    I focused my uBlock Origin config on general screen reader issues such as ads, tracking, disabling YouTube Shorts, and making Twitch tabs use less CPU.

    I use this all the time and don’t run into issues myself, so that’s why I’m sharing it.
    If you want to support something later, I’ll include how to whitelist.

    Highly recommended:
    Use [NextDNS](nextdns.io/?from=773mk4ah) **and** uBlock Origin.
    This way, you can use any browser you want with the configuration.
    (Control D is an option, but it’s less accessible, so I’m not covering it here.)
    This post assumes you already know how to use uBlock Origin.

    ## The Best Web Browser?

    In my opinion as a power user, there is **no best web browser** and no best browser engine.
    Here’s what I use or recommend:

    * **Brave** (adblocking turned off)
    * **Firefox**
    * **Librewolf**
    * **Ungoogled Chromium**

    I’d stay away from other mainstream browsers, but if you must use them, use them.
    I’m just sharing my best practices from experience, not gospel.

    > **Note:**
    > You may have to use uBlock Origin Lite if you use Chrome soon, once Manifest V3 rolls out.
    > That’s why I avoid mainstream browsers entirely.

    ## Configuring NextDNS

    [Sign up for NextDNS](nextdns.io/?from=773mk4ah), then enable these subscriptions on the Privacy page:

    * NextDNS Ads & Trackers Blocklist
    * hBlock
    * anti-AD
    * HaGeZi – Multi PRO
    * OISD

    **Under Native Tracking Protection, enable:**

    * Windows (All versions)
    * Apple (iOS, macOS, tvOS)
    * Samsung (Phones, Tablets, Smart TVs)
    * Amazon Alexa (Alexa-enabled devices)

    For a detailed NextDNS guide, check:
    [github.com/yokoffing/NextDNS-C

    ## My uBlock Origin Config

    [Here is my uBlock Origin configuration (OneDrive link)](1drv.ms/t/c/37d17987e3514f7f/E).
    Right-click and save as to download the file.
    Then in uBlock Origin, open the dashboard and restore from the file you downloaded.

    I will try to update this whenever I can.

    If you’re using **uBlock Origin Lite**, open the extension settings and check the categories you want to block.
    There are no importable settings for Lite.

    ## Whitelisting

    You can whitelist in NextDNS by [going to this page](my.nextdns.io/525211/allowlist) and entering the domains or subdomains you want to allow.

    For uBlock Origin, open the dashboard, go to the Trusted Sites button, and enter your domains or subdomains to whitelist.

    At this point, you should have an ad-free experience across the web!
    If you have any suggestions for subscriptions, let me know in the comments.

  14. If the USA wanted me to buy their products, then they should sell them in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). So far, it seems that only Chinese companies have done this for the Malaysian market. There are even many flagship phones priced at RM1000++ instead of iPhones priced at RM5000++. What Chinese companies offer us is better because of competitive specifications as well as competitive prices, and more control due to the Android OS, rather than iOS by default, which I don't trust Apple to handle my data. Chinese companies have addressed the issues of affordability and accessibility to technology for Malaysians, while the USA only sells products that we use to show off or appear superior to others. Is the USA trying to force us to buy their products? This seems like modern authoritarianism to me.

  15. CW: Disability chat

    @UnCoveredMyths I agree with you on the combination being a real need. Beyond my #EDS, I've got #neuropathy that flares & fades with the weather & some frostbite damage on my fingers so as I don't really see combination devices readily available- my best accomodation is likely to be a desk setup where I've a laptop &/or desktop with a clicky keyboard & a touchscreen pad attachment or smartphone that's kept on said desk, just for it's touchscreen.
