  1. CW: Hot take

@pixelate yeah, as much as this irks me, I agree. I'm not at all a programmer or coder, just a disabled person with mobility issues that basically make touchscreen use impossible.

Part of the issue for me is, even as there are organizations that cover my disabling medical conditions, none really cover quality of life measures, beyond "join a support group based on & in Facebook" & "get a caregiver to do whatever it is for you".

I'm planning on getting #Elementary within the next 2-4 months and as I can, with other projects, try to get physical keyboard smartphones to work with degoogled operating systems.

  4. I have #peripheral #neuropathy in both feet. Cannot feel anything on the front half of either foot (1/10 on Ipswich a few years ago).
An hour or so ago I sat down to catch up on online stuff. Stood up a few minutes ago and there are large bloodstains on the carpet. Again, deep cut - from where?? - in a toe. Can't feel a thing, hard to clean.

Yes, I know the answer is #slippers but No, Just No. I'm not THAT old yet.

  6. Saw a neurologist. Great news: yes, I have tremors; but they are not any kind of #Parkinsons. It’s kinetic tremors. They’re mild, and may be reduced by medication changes. The bad news is my balance. That’s #Neuropathy and it’s way worse than I thought it was and there’s a lot of rules she gave me about dealing with it.

  7. But it’s not, I can tell that it is a resistance from my body; a hesitation to action. You just draw in smaller and smaller, like a hermit crab covering itself with as many shells as it can, until it can’t move.

I’ve been dealing with this for about five years. It’s become my normal, but often it does not feel sustainable. I wonder if I can ever break out of this or if this is just going to be the nature of my being.

One day. One morning. I have to keep moving.

  8. I am doing my best, and so are you, but my hands hurt badly. So much I don’t think I could type on my computer keyboard. I wake up every day like this and figure out how to feel like I am not shutting down.

There is a combination of anxiety and physical pain where you’ll find your body resisting move more more. For a while, I thought it was a sort of cataplexy, sudden muscle weakness, like when you wake up in the morning and you can’t make a strong fist.

  9. @PostcardsFromParadise
@gardening Seed tape is meant as a convenience method, to evenly plant seeds without a machine.

It isn't really helpful to those like myself with #neuropathy, even as I'm sure if your #disability is that of limited energy & you can find what you want to grow in it's extremely limited plants/plant varieties, it would be useful. (This is why I don't use seed tape, as I'm the one doing the planting of our gardens & it's my spouse who's the person who can handle it decently & does have said limited energy. )

*Coated seeds which are at least a little more widespread in varieties with it than Seed tape, can help those with neuropathy especially in tiny items like most culinary herbs & lettuce, but wherever possible, I prefer to emphasize natural statuses as being helpful, as with these spinach seeds.

For those with tactile problems &/or mild #neuropathy in your hands. I've a seed recommendation, namely Galilee #Spinach because said seeds beyond being about 1/8 the size of corn, also have spines extending beyond just the ball that's typical of spinach seeds.

Just putting them in to germinate today & I've never had an easier time of handling similarly sized seeds, even as my neuropathy is sizable today. #ChronicLife #Gardening

  11. Question for the #dude #bros out there: How do you keep your #wedding #ring from bothering you during #gaming activities? I often find my ring gives me some #nerve issues when Gaming™ or like laying on my left side in bed. I think it's more of a position thing that triggers it? I do have some nerve issues in my left arm anyway, so maybe there's nothing I can do. But I thought I'd ask.

  12. CW: Disability chat

@UnCoveredMyths I agree with you on the combination being a real need. Beyond my #EDS, I've got #neuropathy that flares & fades with the weather & some frostbite damage on my fingers so as I don't really see combination devices readily available- my best accomodation is likely to be a desk setup where I've a laptop &/or desktop with a clicky keyboard & a touchscreen pad attachment or smartphone that's kept on said desk, just for it's touchscreen.

  13. A small town in rural Ohio is producing #EnrichedUranium again. Here's why that matters

The Ohio Newsroom | By Erin Gottsacker
    Published April 18, 2024

"When Centrus Energy flipped three switches at its new plant last fall, it was a new beginning for an industry that had been dormant for more than a decade in #Ohio: #UraniumEnrichment.

"As the U.S. looks to meet its clean energy [sic] goals, there’s increasing demand for the resource, which is necessary for nuclear power generation.

"For years, the U.S. didn’t have a American-owned source of enriched uranium. (A subsidiary of #Urenco enriches #uranium in #NewMexico, but it's owned by a conglomeration of foreign governments and European-based businesses.) Now, #CentrusEnergy is attempting to fill in the gap. And it’s doing that at a plant in #PiketonOhio.

    [...]

"Some locals aren’t thrilled. One group worries about the industry’s connection to #NuclearWeapons. Others fear the waste from the plant could #contaminate the surrounding #environment. The specter of the last time #uranium was being enriched in Piketon looms large: many former plant workers get federal compensation because of illnesses they sustained as a result of exposure to #toxic and #radioactive materials.

"'I feel violated,' said Vina Colley, a former worker at the #PortsmouthGaseousDiffusionPlant. 'They said I would get more radiation by getting on the plane than working out here.'

"In the time since she worked at the plant, she’s battled #beryllium disease, #ChronicBronchitis, #COPD, #neuropathy and #HeartFailure."

  14. Sensorimotor #polyneuropathy may be common in treated autoimmune thyroiditis, but, unlike in other causes of #neuropathy (e. g. #diabetes), it has a unique pattern in quantitative sensory testing (#QST) with low thresholds for mechanical and thermal pain.

  15. You know how it doesn’t hurt until you see the cut on your fingers?
Well #peripheral #neuropathy is like that, except it still doesn't hurt even after you have seen it.

Blood on the floor is the usual indicator.

  16. Part of the reason I’ve been quiet here is because I’ve been struggling with idiopathic #Neuropathy and #paresthesia for a while now.

Numb and sometimes painful hands and feet. After 2 MRIs, spinal tap, EMG, and at least 4 rounds of blood tests I can give long list of what it’s not. No MS, Lupus, Lyme, and neg for a lot of auto immune disorders. Never had COVID.

Now on Wahl’s Protocol which is kinda #LowFodmap meets #paleo. Not helping but never ate healthier in my life.

    Anyone else?

"These results provide important insights into the function of NaV channels in sensory neurons, identify TMEM233 as a previously unknown NaV1.7interacting protein, and describe the dispanins as bifunctional proteins that cause allosteric changes in channel gating upon binding of pain causing venom peptides."

    ~

Not finding much on TMEM233. Some dispanins are interferon activated.

    review article from 2012:
    - The Dispanins: A Novel Gene Family of Ancient Origin That Contains 14 Human Members
    doi.org/10.1371%2Fjournal.pone

"The IFITM1–3 proteins were identified 25 years ago as being upregulated by interferons (IFN) [6]. Recently they received considerable attentions as IFITM1–3 were found to prevent infection of a growing list of viruses such as HIV-1, SARS influenza A H1N1, West Nile and Dengue fever viruses [7], [8], [9], [10]. Hence, proteins of the IFITM family mediate part of the antiviral response orchestrated by IFNs. However, the IFITM family is also involved in other processes such as oncogenesis, bone mineralization (IFITM5) and germ cell development (IFITM1 and 3) and IFITM5 has not been identified as interferon-inducible [11], [12], [13], [14]. Although the biological roles of the IFITM genes are emerging, no thorough evolutionary analysis has been performed on this group.

In this study, we sought to infer the evolutionary history of the human IFITM genes and identify potential homologues. We mined 36 eukaryotic species, covering all major eukaryotic groups, and found that the IFITMs form a subfamily in a larger novel family that has ten human members in addition to the four IFITM genes. We propose Dispanins as a novel name for this family, which refers to their common 2TM structure. "
