Superdrag Plays Regretfully Yours

Pivoting from their early singles, Superdrag polished up their pop side here, and landed a significant hit with Sucked Out (which had to be hell to sing; ouch).

You can hear where Davis got a whiff of MBV and RIDE, especially on side 2.

Nice to have it on vinyl - here's hoping more Superdrag gets repressed...

My copy of this absolute classic has arrived!

The 2013 reissue from Side One Dummy has always gone for STUPID money, as it is the only vinyl copy available (it was the first) beside this one.
I was reading the reviews of this issue from people, and I swear, they must be either:
1. Deaf
2. Stupid
3. Using shitty equipment
4. All of the above

It sounded very good on my system straight out of the sleeve, and sounded even BETTER after a sonic cleaning.

If you’ve ever had ANY love for this album, and you’re not using a Fisher Price toy record player, you can buy it with confidence.
I am very pleased with this.

22 years ago today on July 9, 2002, Superdrag released Last Call for Vitriol, the last Superdrag album til 2009's Industry Giants. It was a darker kind of record, John Davis was going through stuff. But it spawned amazing songs, from intro track 'Baby Goes to 11' with Robert Pollard guesting to the last notes of the bluesy Drag Me Closer to You.

This album is special to me, I have the hand and match from the cover tattooed on my upper right arm (no photo, it BADLY needs touching up), and my wedding ring has 'Hannah goes to 11' inscribed in it. I sing it to her sometimes haha. What an album 🔥

Sometimes you find something online that's very strange and rare, and I have such a thing since apparently I'm a Superdrag/John Davis fanatic - a covers record called 'Sincerest Form of Flattery' that I can't even find anything about online. I do know that he did the covers from 1995-2014, everything from Guided by Voices that I mentioned to @buru5 to a KILLER cover of Norwegian Wood that I like more than the original. Even Sebadoh. John Davis from Superdrag covering SEBADOH. Just mindblowing.

But here's another great original John track, this one ended up on a Rectangle Shades album. What a pretty song. He can write em.

Moved on from the morning's death metal onto John Davis, the dude from Superdrag. If you didn't know, he has a bunch of other projects (Epic Ditch, The Lees of Memory, The Rectangle Shades) and his solo stuff is rad too. Met him twice, once on a solo tour, once after a 'drag show. When I met him at his solo show around 2007, he signed my CD copy of this, 'Arigato!' from that year.

Tracks like this one fuckin RIP because he's into Black Flag as much as he is the Beatles.
