weightless when he cocked
and shot on a Thursday in the back
seat of a Ford a drug deal
not the kid we thought we taught
polite as winter nights voice as soft
as snow didn’t need to teach him harm
from harm his slender fingers
couldn’t squeeze a trigger days
when the blunt shovels of rain
tasted like rust when a riverrun
of blossoms harsh as gossip
covered the rally court maybe the meaty
talk of money that hustled in the desks
in front of him relished him
talk it was all talk the way calm
water is talk ‘til it splashes
on the Wicked Witch of the West
what happened to the sweet gait
of syllables that ran down
the vein of his finger we pour morning
into blossoming plums the sky leans
out and over and maybe lies and losses

with a brown birthmark
the wind the wave he
kayaks through the day
way behind him the day
his aunt had her way with him
a nod to the sun
that warms his flint of skin
and glints indigo
off the water where dolphins
bob beside him
and his bruised thighs
a nod to the ghosts
of summer attracting light
sensing color singing hymns
for those who have no ears
a music rummaged from winter
reborn for those alone
a nod to the birthmark
that braves the breaths
and rides the roll
and swell of water
the day residing inside
the paddle that pulls him on
a nod to the sound
that nests inside the empty
drum under the goat skin
sound that pounds
in silence

a wind that swims a field
his body a clock with minutes ticking
the afternoon that traps his shadow
his hands that flick and fold
the chimes of light that clink
that bare his skin
to pose to smile slow and sly
a girl a woman gentle with grammar
who opens herself to her self
and intricates of air
to listen through hours
to hurry past boys
past thighs that open
to a body that is drowning
so new to puberty and feeling his curves
following shallows of skin
to flirt to pivot thin

I do know that he did the covers from 1995-2014, everything from Guided by Voices that I mentioned to @buru5 to a KILLER cover of Norwegian Wood that I like more than the original. Even Sebadoh. John Davis from Superdrag covering SEBADOH. Just mindblowing.
But here's another great original John track, this one ended up on a Rectangle Shades album. What a pretty song. He can write em.
