I see Wired has an article about "smart rings" and I'm imagining a ring you put on someone's finger and it tells you if they will be a reliable or faithful spouse before you finalize the wedding ceremony.

"Health data is increasingly an important part of law enforcement or government investigations. Wearable data has been critical in a number of cases, where information about heart rate and steps was used to determine the whereabouts of individuals. And the surveillance company Penlink calls fitness trackers and wearables an “overlooked source” for law enforcement since they tend to show movement patterns and changes in heart rates. Law enforcement can try to get access to this data through subpoenas or warrants.
There are many potential privacy issues with these sorts of devices, including whether the companies who make them share or sell information to third-parties. But here we are choosing to focus on two facets we’re concerned with around health data itself: 1) whether the company shares information with law enforcement and governments and 2) if they offer end-to-end encryption, which means the company itself can’t access that health data to begin with."

Curious about #smartrings as I'm wearing the fitting practice #RingConn Gen 3 right now. My FitBit Flex 2 self-destructed a few months ago. Sleep/activity are all I *need*, the other stuff will be icing, even if inaccurate on a medical level. About 7 hours in, I'm barely noticing it on my non-dominant index finger. About the same as my titanium wedding band.
Any insights, tips, cautions?

Samsung updates the Galaxy Ring!
The smart rings that Samsung have introduced last summer have been updated again to the May update, which was released on May 26th in different regions, such as India. This happened after a week of releasing the same update to Korean units. You can identify the update with the following build number:
- SM-Q50x: Q50XWWU2AYD1
To install the update to your smart ring, open Galaxy Wearable, navigate to your ring settings, and navigate to software updates. After that, you should be able to see information about this software update. The following changes were made:
- Samsung Health
- Support for “Activity consistency” to Energy Score. By properly managing your activity levels, you can maintain your energy.
- Support for sleep environment management and report. Check your sleep report to set up your home into a better environment for healthy sleep. Use SmartThings to automatically control smart devices and create the optimal sleep environment. Update the Samsung Health app to the latest version (6.29.5).
- Stability and reliability
- The stability has been improved.
Make sure that your ring is fully charged before you attempt to do this update. Don’t turn off your phone, your Bluetooth, or your ring during the update process, or you might experience issues with it later. Your internet connection should be stable to avoid issues when updating your ring software.

Something bugging me of late - small consumer electronics, like #phones, #smartwatches, or #smartrings. Why is a 1 year #warranty acceptable. The only message that sends is that the $500-$2000 price tag is an annual expense and screw the sustainability. When a company like Garmin (not to pick on them especially) says "built to last" on their About Us, but stands by a product for a year I call bullshit. We should demand better, and have laws that require better.
