  2. Samsung updates the Galaxy Ring!

    The smart rings that Samsung have introduced last summer have been updated again to the May update, which was released on May 26th in different regions, such as India. This happened after a week of releasing the same update to Korean units. You can identify the update with the following build number:

    • SM-Q50x: Q50XWWU2AYD1

    To install the update to your smart ring, open Galaxy Wearable, navigate to your ring settings, and navigate to software updates. After that, you should be able to see information about this software update. The following changes were made:

    • Samsung Health
      • Support for “Activity consistency” to Energy Score. By properly managing your activity levels, you can maintain your energy.
      • Support for sleep environment management and report. Check your sleep report to set up your home into a better environment for healthy sleep. Use SmartThings to automatically control smart devices and create the optimal sleep environment. Update the Samsung Health app to the latest version (6.29.5).
    • Stability and reliability
      • The stability has been improved.

    Make sure that your ring is fully charged before you attempt to do this update. Don’t turn off your phone, your Bluetooth, or your ring during the update process, or you might experience issues with it later. Your internet connection should be stable to avoid issues when updating your ring software.

  4. Samsung Galaxy Ring certainly seems to be an improvement on the Oura Ring

    It's good to see the reviews starting to come in on Samsung's Ring. I've long been an Oura Ring user, but in future I'll be looking at all other options. I certainly don't like Oura's subscription model, so Samsung's Ring will be a consideration, especially as I'm using a  Galaxy phone (yes, sadly it seems some features work "better" with a Galaxy phone - sounds like Apple!).

    What is still outstanding for me, is to see some scientific (i.e. evidence based) reports on the accuracy of the Galaxy Ring.

    But what I'm liking so far, in comparison to my Oura Ring, are these features:
    * Battery intensive tasks can be sent to the Galaxy phone
    * First point can result in way better battery life (over a week)
    * It's lighter, thinner, with a slightly more concave shape
    * Ring charges inside a see-through case
    * LED on charger shows charge level around perimeter of the ring (vs Oura just having a single LED)
    * Auto detect workouts
    * Oura only detects steps and not actual exercise heart rates
    * Double pinch gesture

    This Ring will work with any Android phone, but clearly it's advantage is if you have a Galaxy phone.  If you don't have a Galaxy phone then you may want to consider the Oura Ring, as it costs less, but its subscription needs to be taken into account for say a 3-year period.
