thanks to @dosnostalgic for pointing this out: SimAnt has special support for the Covox Speech Thing, which is a pretty wild DAC that plugs into your parallel port.

if you played Sierra On-Line adventure games as a kid, you would have seen ads for the Disney Sound Source in most sierra game boxes - it was another clone of the Covox LPT-connected DAC

it's not easy to find recordings of real covox devices, and i've never owned one. @dreambyte recorded playing SimAnt on an amber monochrome monitor with a covox attached

the results are super interesting. it reminds me of the Macintosh DAC used in games like Dark Castle

maxis artists' 1-bit monochrome art for the early educational titles is so underrated. zoom in for some incredibly crisp pixels. 😋

for anyone else curious: this is the extremely obscure 640x480 2-colour VGA/MCGA version of the game that you can only see by installing from diskette. the mac b+w version has the same 1-bit artwork.

Eigentlich habe ich das Spiel ja bereits und zwar mehrfach... für IBM PC 5.25" und 3.5" und für Amiga als Teil der SimClassics Collection. Aber trotzdem konnte ich diese noch komplett neue und ungeöffnete Retailbox von SimAnt für Amiga doch nicht einfach liegen lassen. Nicht für 20 Euro. Ging einfach nicht. 😉

The other day I played a little #SimAnt in experimental mode, anticipating a future stream. It really made me curious as to how accurate the ant #AI is (probably not very). The interplay between the pheromone trails and the random-walk behaviour just led to clumps of stuck ants when i built a maze for them to step through. The urge is growing to decompile the whole thing and examine the code. #RetroGaming

Here's a beautiful release filled to the brim with manuals so thick they would make Tolkien blush.
Sadly the disks are 800K Mac formatted so I can't actually read them on my Macs as they are "too modern." I think it's ok if I fetch an image from the Garden in this case 😄️
This was apparently a limited edition, though I don't know how limited it was.

On this note, I had an idea this morning about using #CellularAutomata to simulate ant behaviour. It seems like you could track the levels of ant pheromones (specifically, the nest and trace pheromones as modelled in #SimAnt) through setting the value of a cell to be an RGB value; for instance, more blue would mean a stronger nest scent, more red, a stronger food scent, and so on. (You could represent this more compactly than 256x256x256, but the idea seems sound.) #cs

Beat em! The red ants were attacking me for a good while, but once you find that sweet spot of foraging, digging and nursing plus the right balance of breeders, workers, and soldiers, you can do some real damage. Protect your queen, grow the army and keep eating, and you're good.
