For the last two decades, I've been on the hunt for a custom RCT2 park that I played on an old PC, but couldn't ever find it. I couldn't remember the name of the park, but I knew that I was astonished by how well-made it was. It had a Greek theme to it, with lots of whites and blues in the color palette.

I just found it!

It's called "Acropolis Revisited". I absolutely cannot wait to dive back into this park!

De laatste vijftig jaar zijn er enorm veel ontwikkelingen geweest op computergebied. Ik ga je aan de hand van een serie artikelen meenemen door die periode vol ontwikkelingen, vreemde uitvindingen, verdwenen merken en nog veel meer. Vandaag in deel 49 de geschiedenis van de RollerCoaster Tycoon: het spel waarmee een generatie pretparkdirecteur werd.

Iedereen die eind jaren negentig een pc had, kent het gevoel waarschijnlijk nog wel. Je bouwde een achtbaan die er op papier spectaculair uitzag, opende vol trots de attractie en zag vervolgens de eerste bezoekers misselijk uitstappen. Of erger nog: het karretje vloog met volle snelheid uit de bocht omdat je net iets te enthousiast was geweest met een looping op grote hoogte. Vervolgens verschenen overal in het park kleine tekstballonnetjes met klachten over te hoge prijzen, te lange wachttijden of vies sanitair. Uren later zat je nog steeds achter het scherm, vastbesloten om dat ene park eindelijk winstgevend te maken.

Voor veel pc-gebruikers was RollerCoaster Tycoon meer dan zomaar een computerspel.

So cool the idea to optimize the path finding of the NPCs in RollerCoaster Tycoon down to a certain amount of nodes, cancel it and then let the NPC say: „I can't find the exit“.

It's not a bug, its a feature.

Those ideas can only come together when we don't separate designers from engineers and come up with creative workarounds for limitations.

I just learned about this upcoming indie game, it looks great! It's clearly inspired by Transport Tycoon and early SimCity. I'll definitely be giving that demo a try (if it works on Linux), it looks right up my alley.
