  1. Goal #1 – Read Every Day

Not sure what happened, but I managed to not read any manga or graphic novels last month. With two OIPA weekends, I did get two audiobooks in, along with a few books of varying sizes.

Goal #2 – Post To My Website Every Day

    The streak is over.

There were two days in the middle of March where I just didn’t have it in me to write anything. I’m on a new streak, currently sitting at 13 days. This post will make it 14, so two weeks in a row.

There’s two things I’d like to do to make my daily posting easier – Plan my posts ahead of time and schedule posts in advance so I’m ready for days where I’m too busy or too wiped to post. I’m hoping to use my bullet journal to plan my posting month.

Goal #3 – Minimize Reliance on Big Tech

This month, I focused on replacing my calendar, contacts, notes, tasks, and file syncing services with Nextcloud. I eventually plan on self-hosting my Nextcloud instance, but my current solution is working perfectly.

Goal #4 – 2024 Winking Lizard World Tour of Beers

I finished my first quarter of beers just in time for the finish of first quarter of 2024.

    • Sullivan’s Irish Red Ale
    • Garage Beer Lime Light Lager
    • Guinness Dry Stout
    • Vedett Extra White Witbier
    • Fat Heads Bumble Berry Fruit Beer
    • Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold Dortmunder Export
    • Thirsty Dog Coffee Siberian Night Russian Imperial Stout
    • 3 Floyds Zombie Dust Pale Ale
    • Market Garden Progress Pilsner

  2. Two months into 2024 and my goal progress continues, though not at the same pace. Some goals have slowed down, while others have caught up, if not surpassed, their planned pace. Let’s take a look.

Goal #1 – Read every day

After my crazy reading pace in January, I’ve come back down to Earth here in February. While I’ve continued to get reading in every day of the month, the books I’ve read have been longer, so I only finished five books, bringing my total to seventeen for the year.

    • The Universe in a Nutshell (Audiobook)
    • Babel
    • Beneath the Sugar Sky (Audiobook)
    • Exam Red MS-900 Microsoft 365 Fundamentals, 2nd Edition
    • Attack on Titan, Volume 2 (Graphic Novel)

Goal #2 – Post to my website every day

The streak continues. As of Thursday, I have posted for 62 consecutive days, including all of January (31) and February (29). With this post, the streak will reach 64.

Goal #3 – Minimize reliance on Big Tech

My focus in February was on my email, specifically getting more and more off of Gmail and onto the open source and privacy focused Proton Mail. It turns out there is also a Proton Mail app for Mac which, while currently in beta, is an excellent replacement for the built in Mail app, ensuring I am completely in the Proton environment, at least from an email standpoint.

Goal #4 – 2024 Winking Lizard World Tour of Beers

Unlike my reading pace, I’ve exceeded my beer tour pace thanks to purchasing a 6 pack and more regular weekly visits to the Lizard. I sit at 15 as of the end of February.

    • Sam Smith Organic Chocolate Stout
    • 3 Floyds Turbo Reaper IPA
    • 3 Floyds Gumball Head Wheat Beer
    • Abita Purple Haze Raspberry Lager
    • Aspall Dry English Coffee
    • Avery White Rascal Wheat Beer
    • Ayinger Braiweisse Hefeweizen
    • B. Nektar Kill All the Golfers Mead
    • Abita Mardi Gras Maiboxk
    • Abita Andygator Doppelbock
    • Southern Tier Irish Cream Stout
    • Fat Heads St. Fatty’s Red Ale
    • Great Lakes Conway’s Irish Red Ale

  3. We’re already finished with the first month of the year!

When the year began, I set myself with four goals I wanted to meet. Now that we’ve made it through January, let’s see how I’m doing:

Goal #1 – Read every day

It’s amazing how changing my focus has helped me read more. In previous years, I planned to read a book a week, 52 books in a year, but I never achieved that level. Last year, I barely made it past 20 books read.

In the month of January alone, I’ve read TWELVE.

    • Rocket Fuel
    • Astroball (Audiobook)
    • WTF? What’s The Future And Why It’s Up To Us
    • Children of Time
    • We Stand On Guard (Graphic Novel)
    • Attack On Titan, Volume 1 (Manga)
    • Down And Out In The Magic Kingdom
    • Literally The Book On Customer Success For MSPs
    • The Tea Master And The Detective
    • Day Of The Dead
    • The Theory Of Everything (Audiobook)
    • Exam Ref AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals, 3rd Edition

Goal #2 – Post to my website every day

I might be cheating a little, but this post will not only achieve this goal for January, but it will be my 34th straight day posting to Medi-Nerd. While some of these posts are simple, such as my Throwback Thursday photo posts, I’ve also written longer posts for book reviews and about my third goal, which we’ll talk about next.

Goal #3 – Minimize reliance on Big Tech

Mind you, I have a head start on this since I’ve moved some of my services, such as my email, away from companies like Google. While I’ve posted about changing my web browser to Firefox and my search engine to DuckDuckGo, I have plenty more to move and talk about.

Goal #4 – 2024 Winking Lizard World Tour of Beer

Once again, I am working my way to earning another tour jacket from Winking Lizard by drinking 100 unique beers on their tour during the calendar year. So far, however, I’ve only had two beers as I’ve only been to the Lizard once so far. Fortunately, I can buy bottles and cans of beer that are on the tour and take them home, so expect a report of a 6 pack purchase in the near future.

    • Ace Pineapple Cider Pint Glass (120)
    • Dogfish Head Citrus Squall Golden Ale Pint Glass (625)

Here’s to continuing my success in February!

  4. Some time ago, shortly after I received a promotion at my job to an executive position, my company implemented a system for running the company which would solidity who was accountable for what, keep the executive team on the same page, and allow us to define our goals and issues so we could focus on achieving and resolving them. While I am no longer at that company, the processes I learned and implemented appealed to me to the point that I chose my current job in part because they follow the same system, the Entrepreneurial Operating System, or EOS.

This system, developed by entrepreneur Gino Wickman, provides a simple and effective framework which any small or medium sized business can use to ensure their leadership team is focused on their core values, long and short term goals, and theirs roles within the company. Two of those roles, the visionary and the integrator, are roles I am very familiar with as I was the EOS integrator as part of my executive roles. These roles are the focus of the book Rocket Fuel, one of a series of books from Wickman about EOS and the many facets of the system.

In Rocket Fuel, Wickman writes about what these two roles entail. The visionary, who is usually the president, CEO, and/or owner of the company, has the role of coming up with the ideas which the company may pursue. Nine out of ten of those ideas might be off the wall, but that tenth idea that does work is the goal. The integrator, on the other hand, is the person who makes sure that everything is running smoothly and, in some situations, plays the foil to the visionary to filter those ideas so the focus is on that one great idea.

The book title, Rocket Fuel, becomes clear as Wickman shows the reader how, like two volatile chemicals which, when combined, create the propellant which sends the rocket to new heights, the visionary and integrator can combine to lead their company to new levels of success while also allowing them and their team to live normal lives outside of work. Wickman also reviews the six key components of the EOS model, with the focus of how the visionary and integrator fit into these components.

I would recommend reading Rocket Fuel if you are in one of these two roles or are looking for somebody to fill either for your company. If you are interested in EOS or are about to implement it at your company, I would suggest reading Get A Grip and/or Traction before this book as those are “EOS entry level” bookswhich better serve to introduce the EOS world to its readers.

  5. Over the past few years, I’ve tried to set myself a goal of reading a certain number of books in a calendar year. Usually, that goal is 52 books so I average a book a week. Life hasn’t always let me do so, however. Last year, for example, I was only able to read 19 books. This is by no means a failure on my part, but I do think I need to change my goal focus. Instead of a set number of books in the year, I’d like to build the habit of reading every day, even if it’s just a few pages.

The books I plan to read will come from the following:

To track my reading progress, I have an account on Bookwyrm, a federated social media service for reading. I’ll also try to write reviews of the books I read, both here and on Bookwyrm. If you’re also tracking your reading, let me know where I can follow you so I can see what you’re reading.
