Canadian book loving friends!
Reciprocard, the website that helps you find all the public libraries that your local library card makes you eligible for, is now operational in Canada! Check it out:
Also, I'm really sorry our president is such a dick.

I often find non-resident library cards are a better bang for my buck, rather than an Audible subscription, so, the below are ones I still pay for.
Queens Public Library
Queens, NY
Cost: $50 / yearCarnegie Library of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, PA
Cost: $60 / 2 yearsNote that Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh requires you to email them a state ID so I will let that one go, and replace it with,
Fairfax County Public Library
Fairfax, VA

Spotted in my RSS feeds: ReciproCard. From the FAQ: “ReciproCard is a discovery engine that helps you figure out exactly how many library cards you qualify for. By mapping overlapping networks and reciprocal agreements across the country, we help you get more library cards so you can skip the wait for popular titles and unlock more free ebooks and audiobooks on the Libby app.”

Libby Isn't Your Library. It's a Private Equity Asset.
https://unhingedlibrarian.com/research/who-owns-libby/
I went to do a search on DuckDuckGo, and it displayed a message that it had blocked 72 tracking attempts from Libby over the past hour.
Which had me wondering: who owns this app???
OverDrive owns Libby. And OverDrive is owned by KKR, the same private-equity firm that owns Simon & Schuster.

I had the unfortunate good fortune of several books coming off hold on Libby all at once. Several of them were long holds - the 12 to 15 week variety - which means I don't remember WHY they were on my hold list...🙃
So, I chose one at random, put the others on hold again, and am currently enjoying the gentle, humorous story of The Grace of Wild Things, by Heather Fawcett.

I finally got my hands on "The Man Who Died Twice" when my library's copy was available on #Libby (the waiting lists for #ThursdayMurderClub novels in English is loooooong here in Hannover) and what hits me again and again as I read it is how it's impossible to do a follow up movie based on the book, what with the changes to the story they made. After reading just the first novel, I didn't mind the deviations in the movie, but now... Such a missed opportunity!

In 1947, Willard Frank Libby showed that the proportion of carbon-14 to carbon-12 remaining in an ancient organic artifact can be used to establish its date. #Poetry #Science #History #Physics #Carbon_dating #Libby (https://sharpgiving.com/Sharp/thebookofscience/items/p1947a.html)

I finished both my current #audiobook ('Faithbreaker' by Hannah Kaner) and #ebook ('City of Bones' by Martha Wells) today and now I feel empty and lost. I think I'll go to bed without a new audio tonight.
I started tracking this on #OpenLibrary, by the way, but since my #Libby reading and listening history was lost when I switched phones earlier this year and everything I tracked on #bookwyrm was lost with the death of #bookcrastinating, my profile is still pretty empty. https://openlibrary.org/people/lilithelina4764

Well, I learned yesterday that #libby is pretty careful with user data and doesn't save it anywhere in a cloud, or even via the library it's connected with. What I'm saying is - I lost a lot of reading and listening data when I switched phones earlier this year. 😭
A lot of said data I manually entered on @bookrastinating, the #bookwyrm instance I used, but I don't have much hope that that is coming back up again. -

The #koreader statstics are nice, but not really helpful for imports to #openlibrary or #bookwyrm. I guess I would have to combine them with my #calibre library for more information on the books themselves. Still, it's nice to have the data.
Next up: comparison of #libby and #goodreads exports to see how to adjust the first to look like the latter. -

OK, if I want to import my reading statistics to #OpenLibrary, I need a CSV file in the #Goodreads export format. I don't have a Goodreads account, so can anyone tell me what an exported file from there looks like? I'm sure I'll be able to go from my #Libby and maybe #KOReader exports to that format (after all, ETL is a big part or my job), if only I knew what it's supposed to be.
PS: yes, since I'm not over the @bookrastinating catastrophe, I'm trying something other than #bookwyrm for now.

I realised that #koreader actually has pretty neat reading statistics, which I can easily back up to my mailbox cloud using #webdav. I now have an (almost empty) #sqlite database which I haven't looked at yet, but it made me wonder if I could also read books from my #library I borrowed via #libby in KOReader instead. Well, the answer seems to be yes, with an ACSM plugin! :blobcataww:

Today I finished reading 'The Thursday Murder Club' on #Libby and I still can't put any of my latest reading history on #bookcrastinating because it's still dead. 😫
Now, book number 2 in the TMC series by Richard Osman comes with a four week wait at my library, so what to read next? I didn't really feel like starting something new, then my open browser tabs reminded me that 'Platform Decay' by Martha Wells came out and I still have to buy that. -

@dbattistella I love the sentiment but I do like that my public danish #libraries provides acces to its own steaming service that i assume is hosted on some sort of #datacentres. Shout out to #libby for being my favorite source of audiobooks.
