This month, I’m helping 3 local businesses in Glen Eira and Port Phillip go "Sovereign." We’ll audit your tech stack, reduce your international data exposure, and move you toward tools you actually own. If you’re ready to go local and go people, DM me "LOCAL" and let’s grab a coffee.

There’s a myth that "Big Tech" is more secure because they are big. In reality, their complexity is their weakness. Open-source tools are transparent—thousands of eyes can see the code, meaning vulnerabilities are found and fixed by the community, not hidden by a corporate PR department. Simple, local, and secure.

Digital sovereignty isn't just about software; it’s about the physical tools we use. Why buy a "disposable" laptop from a global chain when you can source, repair, and upgrade locally?
Reducing the "international upgrade cycle" is better for your wallet and the planet. Let’s keep our hardware running longer with local expertise.

Digital Sovereignty isn't just about fancy software—it's about having a local safety net. By moving her toward more secure, transparent tools and teaching her the "red flags," we’ve turned a stressful situation into a lesson in digital empowerment.
If you or a small business owner you know feels "exposed" by their current tech setup, don't wait for a scam to happen. Let’s get you secure now.

People often ask why I’m so vocal about the Fediverse and decentralized social media. It’s simple: I believe the "town square" shouldn't be owned by a single global corporation. In Glen Eira and Port Phillip, we value our local community hubs—our digital hubs should be no different. No algorithms, no tracking, just people.

Saturday morning tech tip: Take 5 minutes to check your "Location History" in your primary mobile account. You’ll likely find a minute-by-minute map of your life stored on a server in another country. Switching to local, privacy-first maps and tools isn't just for "techies"—it’s for anyone who values their digital boundaries.

Imagine a business where you aren't worried about the next data breach from a global provider or a sudden price hike. That’s the peace of mind that comes with digital sovereignty. It’s not just tech; it’s business insurance for the modern age.

Every dollar spent on international tech subscriptions is a dollar that leaves our local economy. By choosing local IT experts and open-source tools, we reinvest in Glen Eira and Port Phillip. Let’s keep our community's digital wealth right here.

As a "vibe coder," I believe tech should feel right. It should align with your business values, not just a corporate bottom line. We’re building a tech ecosystem in Melbourne that prioritises authenticity and local connection over global tracking. Let’s build something real.

I’m launching a new movement in Melbourne: Go Local, Go People. Tech shouldn't be a cold, international utility. It should be a local craft supported by people you can actually meet for a coffee. I’m helping businesses in our community reduce their reliance on big tech and move toward sovereign, open-source solutions. Who’s with me?

The biggest search engine provider knows your office location, your commute, and your customer habits better than you do. But "free" tools come at a high price. When you move to local, open-source alternatives, you stop being the product and start being the owner. It’s time to take back control of your digital footprint.

Digital Sovereignty sounds complex, but it’s simple: It’s the difference between renting your business tools and owning them. When the biggest social media providers change their algorithms or pricing, you shouldn't have to scramble. By using open-source tools, you own the keys to your kingdom.

Ever tried getting a human on the phone from a Global tech giant when your email goes down?
Good Luck!
Local IT means having a partner in your timezone, who knows your neighbourhood. It's about human centric support that values your time over a support ticket number.#opensource #bigtech #subscription #enshittification #localIT #DigitalSovereignty #Melbourne #MelbourneBusiness #GlenEira #PortPhillip #OpenSourceTechGuy #CraigLambie42 #CraigLambie

In 2019, here we were taking then Port Phillip councillors Ogy Simic and Dick Gross to look at the problem. The advertising hoarding on the bus stop obscured the sightlines, so people riding past couldn’t see either passengers waiting, or oncoming cyclists. The problem would have been almost solved if the ads had been removed from the glass sides of the bus shelter. #melbourne #cycling #PortPhillip (continued)

Report from Department of Transport shows that the (much-maligned) "pop-up" trial was FINE, actually. It increased ridership and decreased rat-running. But our Councillors decided to rip it all out before the trial could be completed.

CW: City of Port Phillip transport politics
On Wednesday, the City of Port Phillip is proposing to change its Integrated Transport Strategy (ITS). Currently, the key action for bikes is to build a network of protected bike lanes.
This action is supported by the evidence, which indicates that this is the best way to both improve safety for people on bikes, and enable people to ride more.
It is also the most popular among Port Phillip residents, both in the initial consultation on the ITS, and in the recent consultation on the review, where protected bike lanes and better protection at intersections were the top actions supported.
The proposal is to replace this by
(a) a "range of interventions" (e.g green bike lanes, bike stencils, kerb outstands, street art)
(b) advocate to State Government to deliver protected bike corridors. These are two actions that have been expressly opposed by this council. A "range of interventions" --- paint, sharrows, line-markings, NOT protected lanes--- were what was delivered by the pop-up debacle in 2022, and what this Council demanded state government remove.
And last year, when the state government proposed delivering a protected bike lane on Kerferd Rd--- in line with the ITS--- this Council refused to support it.
The current strategy gives us a great map for how to proceed to meet the transport needs of Port Phillip residents and make us more resilient into the future. It's a step backward to replace it by something that is objectively less popular and less effective, and moreover one that the Council has demonstrated no intention to implement.
Take action: write to councillors https://www.ppbug.org/bug-blog/2023/10/27/how-to-contact-the-city-of-port-phillip-councillors. Or come along to Council, register before 4pm Wednesday. Critical mass is tomorrow, Friday! Start 5pm from Fed Square, halfway pick-up at Fawkner Park, then Chapel St (aka the worst street for cycling in Melbourne) to Alma Park.
Is this the first time that Critical Mass has come south of the river?
