This is hostile architecture. It looks ok but these used to be benches in the sun that homeless people would have somewhere warm to sit. As you can see the #merri-bek council isn’t even looking after the plants. #melbourne

Another thing that the City of Merri-bek passed at the meeting on Wednesday night was a resolution to start participating in a dockless bike hire program (eg. Lime bikes)
The interesting part is that the resolution required that all bike hire bikes be parked in designated areas and that all those areas will be on the road replacing car parking spaces. This means that footpaths won't be littered with hire bikes.
This is going to require hundreds of car parking spaces around the city to be converted in to bike hire parking space.
This is a great move and other city councils should do the same.

Last night the Merri-bek City council approved the "Streets for People plan" that provides a master plan for a network of streets across the city that will be targeted for upgrades to make them better for people walking and cycling.
It's a big vague plan that will be implemented on a street by street basis over decades but will hopefully allow consultations to be done in the context of a larger transportation network. It's hoped that people will be better able to see the benefits when they see how a project on their street connects in to a wider network.
The plan also includes upgrading entire streets to provide full connections instead of small ad-hoc piece-meal changes to streets that don't connect to anything in the existing network.
