  1. By the way, throttling the CPU to a constant frequency is the proper way to run the classic game Pharaoh (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharaoh_). This game is too fast on modern computers because its default speed varies with the number of instructions the processor executes per second instead of being rooted in real time (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elapsed_). So, changing its speed settings (protondb.com/app/564530#BBh0du) isn't enough. It needs a stable clock rate.

  2. The Crook, the Scepter, and the Heir

When I first took the Double Crown upon my brow, I believed I understood weight. The weight of the uraeus, the weight of the kemes, the weight of every soul from Abu to the Great Green. But I was a fool. No stone of a pyramid, no chariot of gold, no obelisk scraping the belly of Nut herself has prepared a man for the weight of a child. To be a pharaoh is to be the living Horus upon earth. To be a father is to remember that Horus was once a child in the reeds, hidden, vulnerable, suckled by a […]

  7. Thoth Bestowing Pharaoh With Life and Dominion

Sandstone fragment from the #Temple of Harendotes (Horus the Avenger) in Philae, #Egypt

The scene depicts the god #Thoth bestowing #Pharaoh with #Life (symbolized by the Ankh-hieroglyphs) and Dominion (in terms of divine power, symbolized by the Was-hieroglyphs). This act is part of the Hes-purification #ritual in contexts of the #coronation of pharaoh.

  8. Spent the day installing #CachyOS on my BF's laptop. Picked LXDE as desktop environment.

We had issues with #Linux Mint XFCE that was performing very poorly when running the one steam game he wants to play.

Hopefully Cachy is as lightweight as they advertise and this time around, #Pharaoh (remastered) will work just as well as on Windows 10, if not better.

  9. From @joannechocolat

#Benerib (c. 3050 BC) was a queen consort of ancient #Egypt from First Dynasty.

She was a wife of #pharaoh Hor-Aha, but it is unclear which one ("Benerib" means "sweetheart.")

Either way, she was loved. 🥰

(Image below is a fragment of an ivory box with the names of Hor-Aha and Benerib, found at #Abydos.)

Personal note: In researching this, I came across a different ivory panel described as 'serekh of Hor-Aha in the centre, and Benerib's name is only partially visible at the bottom'.

#TIL from Wiki a 'serekh' is a rectangular enclosure representing the niched or gated façade of a palace surmounted by (usually) the Horus falcon, indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name.

The serekh was the earliest convention used to set apart the royal name in ancient Egyptian iconography, predating the later and better known #cartouche by four dynasties and five to seven hundred years.

(And 'cartouche' is an oval with a line at one end tangent to it, indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name. The first examples of the cartouche are associated with pharaohs at the end of the Third Dynasty, but the feature did not come into common use until the beginning of the Fourth Dynasty under Pharaoh Sneferu.)
