It is no coincidence that the mandorla — the almond-shaped halo around Christ or the Virgin Mary — mirrors the vulva’s form. Named after the Italian for “almond,” it symbolises the threshold between worlds, the sacred gateway through which divine light and incarnation enter the human realm.

“If you just look at the archaeology of our top early medieval monasteries, Portmahomack stands out as exceptionally literate and book-orientated. Exciting news from NYC! St. Patrick's Cathedral is unveiling its largest single artwork ever - a massive mural by Adam Cvijanovic covering three entrance vestibule walls. "What's So Funny about Peace, Love, and Understanding" honors Our Lady of Knock and features Catholic figures like St. Frances Cabrini, Dorothy Day, and Archbishop John Hughes who started the cathedral's construction.

Cathedral Candlelight in Cork
A beautiful brass candle stand in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork. When Helios was on display in the Cathedral, I visited there with Blarney Photography Club and took the opportunity to photograph other parts of the cathedral’s artistic heritage.
The inscription above reads, “Ní mar is toil liomsa, ach mar is toil leatsa”, which roughly translates as, “Not as I will, but as you will”. A reference to the Biblical quote, “Not my will, but thy will be done”.
St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, completed in 1879, is the Church of Ireland cathedral of Cork and is renowned for its French Gothic Revival architecture and exceptional craftsmanship. The cathedral contains numerous examples of fine metalwork, woodcarving, and stained glass, much of it created by Irish artisans.

An intelligent and usually sensitive friend of mine told me once that her own lack of religious belief meant that art with a religious subject was simply not for her.
I was saddened and taken aback by this reaction. I have not an ounce of religious belief, yet I immerse myself in this picture as I might do in a narrative or a piece of music and find it at once moving and pleasurable.
