#MyWay: Bergamota, azahar, jazmín, maderas y almizcle blanco.

Would you carry plant oil and perfume in tiny bottles around your neck? Romans did.
Perfume was used for its sensual pleasure, but also burned with offerings to appease the gods, and to ward off disease.
Rather than alcohol, the base of Roman perfume was oil and fat—olive, bitter almond oil—or the juice of unripe grapes.
The scented materials were mainly imported from Greek city states or other Mediterranean ports like Alexandria in Egypt. Roses, pomegranates, lavender, quinces, grapes, rosemary, basil and, if you could afford it, cinnamon myrrh, classic incense, resins, or roots.
Perfume was priced for its ingredients and bottle. Bottles could be highly decorated with gems, made of alabaster, bronze, lead, silver, or gold. Around their necks, Roman women would tie on a bottle shaped like a sphere, pear, dove, woman’s head, or cup. The ones pictured are tubes, from Rome and Alexandria.

Comprei esse aromatizador Secar achando que era cheiro de lavanda mesmo, mas agora meu banheiro tá com cheiro de Dolce & Gabbana Eau de Toilette. Acho que levaram a expressão “eau de toilette” muito a sério.

I visited their website, and was taken aback by the high prices and gaudy vulgarity of the bottles and packaging.

Is antibacterial or regular hand soap best for killing germs?
Cleaning up our disinfectants: usage of antimicrobial biocides in direct-to-consumer products in Australia Open Access
"In supermarkets and chemists worldwide, consumers are faced with an array of antimicrobial domestic cleaning and personal hygiene products purporting to kill germs and keep people safe. Many of these proven active ingredients (biocides) encourage the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microbes and microbial populations, in turn increasing the likelihood of AMR infections. In order to understand and address the selective pressure towards AMR posed by the unrestricted use of biocides, it is necessary to understand which biocides are most frequently found in consumer products and the current regulatory framework that governs their use. In this research we survey the biocidal active ingredients in the major categories of cleaning and personal care products available from supermarkets and pharmacies in Australia, and comment on the regulations that dictate how these products are tested and marketed. Benzalkonium chloride and ethanol were the two most prevalent antimicrobial biocides in this study, while triclosan, which is banned in several jurisdictions, was found in a small number of products. In Australia, many antimicrobial consumer products are regulated for efficacy and safety under the Therapeutic Goods Act, but the potential to drive microbial adaptation and AMR is not considered. Overall this survey underscores the broad use and light regulation of antimicrobial biocides in products available to the general public in Australia, and provides an information resource to inform further research and stewardship efforts." >>

Is antibacterial or regular hand soap best for killing germs?
Washing hands after using the toilet or patting a dog before a meal is crucial to remove feces-borne bacteria and germs. After COVID the message got through to most people. When one is in town looking for a public amenity or a cafe toilet, it is rare to find hot water, hand soap and a clean (paper) towel. But there is always a toilet spray in 1001 fragrance varieties.
In the absence of the ingredients for basic hand hygiene there is always a free plastic bottle of hand sanitizer since the last pandemic. Staff at grocers, bakers and cafes copiously cover their hands in the "antibacterial" and "antiseptic" products. Every product or packaging absorbs the persistent fragrance of the bought items and travels back into the home. The cost-effective chemical 'solution' does not substitute for hot water, soap and a towel.
"Professor Griffin says products claiming to kill bacteria are "not necessarily substantiated as being any better than just usual soap and water would be...These additives can be harsh and lead to dryness and cracked skin, which can create a pathway for germs to enter the body."
'Regular hand soap is very effective in removing potentially harmful pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites), according to our experts. So, using that water, soap and that pneumatic action to get all of the dirt and grime from your hands and then rinsing is going to be more than adequate to keep you healthy."
"Our experts say there have also been studies suggesting that the use of soaps with antimicrobial additives can contribute to antibiotic resistance, which is problematic." >>

"Scentless Apprentice" is a song by the American #rock band #Nirvana, written by vocalist and guitarist #KurtCobain, drummer #DaveGrohl, and bassist #KristNovoselic. It is the second track on their third and final studio album #InUtero, released in September 1993. Based on the novel #Perfume by #PatrickSüskind, "Scentless Apprentice" is unique among Nirvana songs in that the main guitar riff was written by Grohl, rather than Cobain.

“To-day I think / Only with scents”*…
We’ve considered before smell, the unsung hero of the senses. Today, Kaja Šeruga explains how scientists using chemistry, archival records, and AI are reviving the aromas of old libraries, mummies and battlefields…
We often learn about the past visually — through oil paintings and sepia photographs, books and buildings, artifacts displayed behind glass. And sometimes we get to touch historical objects or listen to recordings. But rarely do we use our sense of smell — our oldest, most primal way of learning about the environment — to experience the distant past.
Without access to odor, “you lose that intimacy that smell brings to the interaction between us and objects,” saysanalytical chemist Matija Strlič. As lead scientist of the Heritage Science Laboratory at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and previously deputy director of the Institute for Sustainable Heritage at University College London, Strlič has devoted his career to interdisciplinary research in the field of heritage science. Much of his work focused on the preservation and reconstruction of culturally significant scents.
Reconstructed scents can enhance museum and gallery exhibits, says Inger Leemans, a cultural historian at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Smell can provide a more inviting entry point, especially for uninitiated visitors, because there’s far less formalized language for describing smell than for interpreting visual art or displays. Since there’s no “right way” of talking about scent, she says, “your own knowledge is as good as the others’.”
Despite their potential to enrich our understanding of history and art, smells are rarely conserved with the same care as buildings or archaeological artifacts. But a small group of researchers, including Strlič and Leemans, is trying to change that — combining chemistry, ethnography, history and other disciplines to document and preserve olfactory heritage…
Read on for the fascinating details: “Recreating the smells of history,” from @knowablemag.bsky.social.

As we take a whiff, we might recall that it was on this date in 1924 that Coco Chanel agreed with the Wertheimer brothers Pierre and Paul, directors of the perfume house Bourjois, to create a new corporate entity, Parfums Chanel, Its signature product was Chanel No. 5. She had been selling small quanitites of the scent in her boutique since 1921.
Traditionally, fragrances worn by women had fallen into two basic categories. Respectable women favored the essence of a single garden flower while sexually provocative indolic perfumes heavy with animal musk or jasmine were associated with women of the demi-monde. Chanel sought a new scent that would appeal to the flapper and celebrate the seemingly liberated feminine spirit of the 1920s. Her scent was formulated by chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux, who designed an unprecedented olfactory architecture, a bouquet of 80 scents whose precious notes were blended with high proportions of aldehydes, organic compounds that carry a crisp, soapy, and floral citrusy scent. In late 1920, when presented with small glass vials containing sample scents numbered 1 to 5 and 20 to 24 for her assessment, she chose the fifth vial. Chanel told Beaux, “I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already, it will bring good luck.”
The first promotion for Chanel No. 5 appeared in The New York Times on December 16, 1924– a small ad for Parfums Chanel announcing the Chanel line of fragrances available at Bonwit Teller, an upscale department store. The fragrance, of course, become a fave. An Andy Warhol subject and worn by everyone from Marilyn Monroe and Catherine Deneuve to Mad Men’s Peggy Olson, the perfume, is a foundational part of fragrance history… and still sells a bottle every 30 seconds.

Question for the perfumers:
I am trying to recreate a scent I had as a teenager. I still have the bottle, and a tiny bit left. I have deciphered what most of the ingredients mean (alcohol, water, sandalwood essential oil, orange essential oil, a preservative, and red and yellow dye) but one of them is just listed as 'perfume'.
WTF does this mean?
I have tried just using orange and sandalwood, but it's not quite right. #perfume #scent #PerfumeMaking #DIY
